legislative approval of his resolution asking the county to provide tax relief to owners of buildings that were demolished as a result of thedecember 27 1983 propane gas ex plosion that killed seven persons and leveled an east side neighborhood the blast which occurr ed when an illegally-stored propane gas tank was being moved killed seven injured 26 firefighters and 69 others the blast also destroyed 14 buildings and badly damaged 80 others all together 36 buildings were demolished either by the blast itself or disaster cleanup efforts by the city of buffalo which commit ted 1.8 million in block grant funds to blast victims now we have a situation where the owners of these 36 buildings are receiving their 1985 county property tax bills which are based on assessments made when they had buildings on their lands now we're going to make these people pay taxes on buildings that no longer exist they've been trhough too much of that their neighborhood was decimated many of their loved ones were in jured and killed and their lives were literally left in ruins robinson said robinson's resolution which is under considera tion by the legislature's finance and management committee asks the coun'v to invest two possibilities for providing tax relief to the jt'tced owners one way would be to just forego the taxes not demand their collection the other is to secure a cash grant that would make up to these owners the difference between the tax assessed on theit property when it contained a building and the tax assessed on it after the building was gone said robinson he said the cash grant would not exceed 3,556 or the difference between the 36 owners total assess ments just on the land itself we're asking the county's real property division to tell us which of these alternatives would be more feasible so we can act on this as soon as possible said robinson abrams warns consumers of deals of a lifetime although the temptation may be great to make a quick dollar
