region national leaders to addresss nul's annual confab jackson campaign impacts on democratic party there can be no denying th.it the jesse jackson candidacy has had a profound effect on the democratic party cer tainly he has forced the party to deal with issues which it would have preferred to ignore no more striking example of this can be found than the keynote speech by new york governor mario cuomo can you imagine a keynoter at any other democratic national con vention actually feeling called upon to raise the issue of apartheid in south africa and the governor did t just mention that oppressive regime in pass ing just listing it as an afterthought behind po land or iran he in fart emphasized that in humane government and called for the party's support of south african freedom fighters like bishop tutu and others who have fought so long and hard against the white-ruled regime this would never have happened had it not been for the pressure continu ally exerted by the jackson campaign the party has been forced to publicly discuss black and third world issues because the rev jackson raised them first - loudly and sub stantively . it is for this reason and this reason only that the other two candidates even began to consider a woman as a running mate it was jesse who first suggested that it was about time that the party put forth a female vice president only after he forced the issue into the public and the other by charier e cobb candidates consciousness did mondale and hart declare themselves m favor of this id*a jesse has lieen in the vanguard of the party constantly pulling forth creative ideas which would rescue the party from its stodgy rut at dead center and always at the core of the rev jacks s idea is a firm and undeniable morality for this the democratic party owes jesse jackson .-. deep debt of gratitude note dr cobb is executive director of the united church of christ commission 1,,r racial justice this 1.7 million member denomination
