reporte mrs jessie blackman co-chairman of the carme lita merriweather founda tion on behalf of the members expressed in dignation over the continu ing attempts to destroy black symbols of achieve ment by a segment of the while media this same method was attempted on jesse jackson when it appeared that he would be a likely candidate for vice president when the white ethnic commur • prefer red raid in arrar i she said other community lead ers were unanimous in expressing their point of view they said this places vanessa williams in the most elite commu nity in the world everyone knows vanessa has a body and is a sex symbol just as marilyn monroe had and just as brooke shields has why don't they remove brooke shields from stardom another person says '' we certainly will not take these continuing assaults on the black community lying down vanessa williams the democratic party no parity without pressure by dr charles e.cobb the national media has begun to take a retrospec tive look at the brutal murder of three young civil rights workers in philadelphia miss on this the 20th anniversary of the 1964 freedom summer many remem ber well that fervent voter registration drive which brought over 700 black and while volunteers from the north to mississippi ll was at the beginning of that summer campaign that the three workers were kidnapped and beat en to death by a white mob seven while miss issippians among them the deputy sheriff of the county were convicted of those murders what the press has failed to examine how ever is the focus of that voter registration cam paign and it is this focus which is particularly im portant to understand this election year the student volunteers and the civil rights work ers from sncc and core were not registering black mississippians into the traditional democratic party even if they'd wanted to this would have been impossible the mississippi democratic party — with the compli city of the national party — was then closed to all black folks in many predominantly black coun ties white registrars re fused to register any black residents throughout mississippi political caucuses were held with no public notice and even if duly registered black people who tried to enter were turned away at the door or told that no meeting was being held having on other re course black and some white mississippians formed their own political party — the mississippi freedom democratic party jmfdp it was the first integrated democratic party mississippi had seen since reconstruction throughout the sum mer student volunteers and workers from sncc core and other civil rights organizations estab lished a party structure which strickly adhered to the rules of the democratic party the corps of northern lawyers which had researched these rules saw to that by august over 60,000 black folks from all over the state were registered as members of the mfdp more importantly new registrants were also given an extensive political edu cation — about their rights about the political process about organizing for change people like fannie lou hamer amzie moore and many other black miss issippians were the foun dation and the strength of this organizing effort they overcame the mur ders the more than 300 church burnings and the countless beatings and jailings to get to the convention that year unfortunately presi dent
