energetic and academically accomplish ed mrs hardiman gradu ated from lemoyne col lege in the same city in * sociology and education mrs hardiman stated ' i decided at an early age that 1 wanted to work with people and especially children i always wanted to work in a group teaching became a natural career for mrs hardiman to pursue but because of her high motivation her natural - ease of learning and her desire for personal better ment so that she could deliver a superior educa tional product to her children mrs hardiman attended the university of michigan from which she obtained her masters de gree in public health education she worked for a short time as supervisor of recreation and parks and as a playground director in memphis just before arriving in buffalo she married the well-known retiree and community worker win ton j flash hardiman the couple has a daugh ter mrs joyce hardiman peskin a professor of english and drama at evergreen college olym pia washington and a grand daughter sehna always keeping in mind that by widening her experience and by con stantly absorbing more she would be able to give more to those that she taught mrs hardiman began to travel early in her career she has traveled widely throughout europe mexico and canada she has also visited russia and cuba noting that increased educational opportunities have opened many new careers to young black people today when form ally educated black wo men were limited to the fields of education nurs ing social work and one or two others mrs hardi man quickly said even with today's opportunities i would still have been a teacher the only thing that i would have done differently perhaps is that i might have majored in special education she said that her first love has always been the classroom but she quickly realized that she could do much more for a greater number of children if she became a principal for in an administrative post one sets the tone of the school her pet peeve during her career were those teachers who disparaged the children or who felt that their sole objective should be to keep the children quiet thus as a principal mrs hardiman attempted to insure the quality of education that the children in her school received by supervising the teachers as much as was possible by making sure that supplies were available for use by the teachers by frequent fair and objec tive teach evaluations and by her expressions of love and concern for the chil dren many children who needed special love atten tion and support were taken to her home by mrs hardiman until they felt strong enough to cope mrs hardiman has been assistant principal american support for peacekeeping forces more critical than ever washington d c — congressman jack kemp r-ny issued the follow ing statement last week i am deeply saddened by the death of two american marines in leb anon and i join with all americans in extending my heartfelt sympathies to their families and friends but to withdraw from lebanon or to fail to support the president's prudent and responsible policies in this crisis would call into question our national commitment to help provide a peaceful solution to the middle east crisis and the restoration i of an independent free i and sovereign lebanon the president is deter mined to protect american interests in the middle east and to safeguard free peoples from terrorism and aggression he has refused to shirk these reponsibilities and at this critical moment he de serves the steadfast sup port of the american people and the congress the calls for withdrawal by members of congress including unfortunately some within his own party serve no purpose except to undermine the president's ability to conduct a co herent credible and essential policy of leader ship in the middle east the united states sent the marines into lebanon as part of a multinational effort to help protect the peace against militias and terrorist groups trying to undermine lebanon's re turn to democracy the continued presence of american marines and french british and italian forces is essential if the lebanese government is to reassert its sovereignty over the county bring to an end to the violence that has destroyed lebanon and deny the forces of aggression and terrorism thqir goals of destruction nor should we ignore the fact that syria the soviet union's most im portant client in th middle east has been supporting and encourag ing these forces and is single-handed obstructing all international efforts to achieve peace the syrians and soviets would like nothing better than for the united states to call back our marines they must understand that the united states and our allies will not be intimidat ed by attacks directed against our forces in lebanon the
