other low-to moderate income state residents will be able to make energy-saving home improvements under a new state assistance pro gram the new energy con servation bank will pro vide residents with low income loans or direct grants to cut energy waste in their homes and apart ments assemblyman william b hoyt id-buffalo said the program should help some buffalo and grand island residents cut their use of expensive natural gas with the heating season approaching it's a good time for people to be thinking about making energy-saving improve ments mr hoyt said the new energy conser vation state office for the aging and the public service com mission local gas and electric utilities will help citizens take advantage of the program to obtain a loan subsidy or grant area residents should request a free home energy audit from their utility and ask the utility representative about their income eligibil ity | interested senior citi | zens should contact one of ' the local agencies for the i elderly erie county senior services 846-8526 the city of buffalo's mayor's office for the aging 855-4141 or the cheektowaga sehior ser vices dept 684-0120 a representative from one of those programs will assist senior citizens in determ ing their eligibility and arrange for a home energy audit conservation measures that are deemed cost effective will be eligible for financing through the energy conservation bank the amount of the loan or grant will be determined on the basis of household income and the total cost of the improve ments to be made the maximum loan under the program will range from 1,250 for a single-family home to 2,250 for a four-family building senior citizens will be eligible for direct grants ranging up to a maximum of 2,500 for a single-family building for more people listen the handsome 6 foot 3 inch kirkland's career has been punctuated with suc cess stories that make him an outstanding role model tor young black males raised in western new york by his parents mr and mrs thomas kirk land he resided at one time in lackawanna be fore moving to buffalo after kirk land's gradua tion from high school he i the handsome six-foot-3 ' inch kirkland's career and graduated from buffalo area high schools before becoming a buf falo policeman kirkland worked at various jobs including the chevrolet river road plant and also owned and operated a television repair sho during his 16 years on the police force kirkland became synonymous with police professionalism he helped to organize the afro-american police as sociation which had as its objective increasing the number of black police men on the force as an end toward ending police bru tality while still on the police force kirkland hosted a television talk show entitl ed kirkland and com pany which had as its format the discussion of timely topics of knowlege able people in the black community while working as a policeman kirkland be gan his college education and in 1975 he received a bachelor's degree in soci ology from the state university of new york at buffalo in 1978 he became commissioner theodore theodore kirkland calvary cme church celebrates pastor's anniversary calvary cme church 1007 ellicott st buffalo celebrated its first anni versary of the pastor and first lady dr and mrs j allen sabb jr and family the weekend of july 9th and july 10th the theme was " sharing love on sat july 9th dr charles l helton pastor of lane metropolitan cme church in cleveland ohio and his gospel ensemble chorus journed to buffalo to participate in the saturday afternoon program the 4 p.m service began with dr helton expounding on the sub ject backward look forward march in love he said as christians we have to forget about telling someone how he or she should live or what great christians we are and just live the christian life he also said that we should let our lights marguerite smith reporter shine before man dr helton quoted v eral passages from the bible to establish his theme he added every christian ought to have a mark in life making heaven their home feed ing the hunger etc and press forward to the mark of high calling in christ jesus the big question was ' how many of us are struggling toward the mark dr helton told his audience that if they make christ their high mark he will give them the victory and that strug gling striving etc won't be necessary and to keep on working pressing toward the mark god is a high mark life without god he said is a mirage in the desert a fantasy a delusion on sun july 10th at 5 p.m a lovely appreciation banquet honoring dr and mrs j allen sabb jr and family was held at the beautiful golden nugget which also proved to be a momentous occasion guest clergy present were bishop and mrs robert saunders of refuge italian-american po lice association of wny has unanimously endorsed her for the office of county legislator in the sth district the association be lieves she would be most beneficial to law enforce the members in advocating her election pawarski calls for standing legislative committee on utility rate increases phones are no longer a luxury for most of us today they are an absolute necessity for the elderly they are an important lifeline for medical assis tance for the urban resident they ate a crucial communication for assis tance against crime increasingly today phones are necessary for work for dealing with government and for countless other tasks this is why it is absolutely crucial that phone service not be priced beyond the means of our average citizen noted timothy pawarski democratic candidate for erie county legislator in the sth district with the breakup of the bell telephone sys tem we could be facing major rate increases for most residential customers in erie county is that these telephone price in creases are coming on the heels of spiraling electric and gas rates it is time that the county legisla ture become actively and fully involved in analyzing and opposing all unreason able utility increases in fact as a county legislator mr pawarski promised that he would support the addition of ; , full subcommittee of the legislature on phone and utility rates this commit tee would analyze each proposed increase and would be prepared to argue each case before the public service commis sion lt is my opinion said mr pawatski that this type of rev junius w cofield 72 were held tuesday aug 23 at faith baptist church 626 humboldt pkwy where he was pastor for seven years succeeding the late rev roscoe m mitchell rev coefield died in millard fillmore hospital friday aug 19 1983 a native of enfield n c mr cofield served as pastor of faith church for seven years before that he was pastor of star of bethlehem baptist 7 church in ossining n v for 33 years he was a graduate of shaw university in raleigh n c . and new york university and the bible semini»-v in new york city rev cofield served as moderator of the central hudson baptist church association new york district he conducted bible study classes for raintree island senior citizens and vas a mem ber of the american baptist convt;.t n na tional baptist convention ministers for 25th year observance sunday aug 28th the rev richard g stewart of houston texas will observe his 25th anniver sary in the christian ministry he will return to st lukes ame zion church lonsdale and e ferry sts rev stewart will be the guest preacher at the 11 a.m service in the ab sence of the pastor rev andrew whitted who will be attending the church meetings in london eng land dinner will be served following the morning service and the anniver sary program will begin at 3:30 p.m the anniver sary sermon will be given by rev marshall strick land of baltimore mary land rev stewart accepted the call to the ministry in july 1958 and preached his trial sermon on aug 10 1958 at st lukes church under the admin istration of the late rev hunter b bess the buffalo native at tended public school 32 and 41 graduating in 1954 his first two years of high school were spent at emerson vocational school where he took courses in tailoring in 1956 he transferred to lafayette high school from which he graduate in 1958 living on adams st he was an active member of the westminster commu nity center which award ed him the outstanding boy of the year award in 1956 during his teen years at st luke church he served as regional direc tor of the youth congress of the ame zion church and also was active in the youth division of the council of churches of buffalo and erie county during his teen
