the buffalo criterion niagara region rochester wednesday august 3-9 1983 vol 58 — no 32 urban league president sees differences between blacks & jews as transitory in a major address in savannah georgia the president of the national urban league has called current differences be tween blacks and jews ' transitory "... rather than sharp and permanent di visions _ john e jacob told a national conference on african american/jewish american relations spon sored by savannah state college that new alli ances between blacks and jews were needed to help america live up to its promises to minorities and to the downtrodden he added black-jewish relations are not as close as they once were just as clearly they are not as bad as many assume what frictions exist between blacks and jews can be traced to common misin terpretations they are transitory differences rather than sharp and permanent divisions the civil rights leader said that some friction between the two groups boils down to the sad fact that some blacks suffer from the disease of anti semitism and some jews from the disease of racism but we cannot define the relations between commu nities by the acts and thoughts of their lease representative elements he said adding the path of inter group relations in an america marked by racism and ethnic tensions has never been easy that two jews in our society he such different minorities said there is a deep as blacks and jews should current of anti-semitism have retained so extraor that runs strong....the dinary a degree of con tin historic thread of anti uing cooperation says a lot semitism and racism is more about the perman always just beneath the ence of their alliance than surface the more transient friction on israel's role as a does •" factor in black-jewish mr jacobs cautioned relations the urban against underestimating league leader declared the strength of racism i see israel as a that must bind blacks and democratic state deserving jews together in common of america's total support cause for despite the the special nature of that apparent acceptance of state rising from a holo caust that we unprecented in the history of the world demands continued sup port for its existence and for its safety in a sea of enemies let me further say that the palestinians are a people whose natural long ings for self-determination must be respected but that they have been badly led and have been mis taken in allowing a terror ist band to monopolize their cause we only hate to see mr arafat's latest rejec tion of the reagan plan which i support — to be convinced that the plo irrelevant to palestinian aspirations destructive of attempts to bring peace to the region and unspeak ably self-serving in its desire to hang on to subsidies and the trap pings of power at the expense of securing a homeland for palestini ans john e.jacob mamie fears succumbs funeral services for the late mamie fears were held thurs july 28th at 1 p.m from
