july ebony wants to know your views evidence of stronger political muscle coupled with disenchantment over racism high unemploy ment and inattention from both the democratic and republican parties are causing blacks every where to study the possi bilities of a black candi date some leaders frequently mentioned for the office are the rev jesse jackson atlanta mayor andrew young tormer atlanta mayor maynard jackson gary mayor richard hatcher congressman walter faun troy and california state assemblywoman maxine waters although the possibility of a black candidate is gaining support others like the urgan league and the naacp oppose the idea the naacp execu tive director benjamin hooks says it's doubtful at this point in history that a black person can be lected 1 what do you think should a black run for president of the u s if so who ebony wants to give you a chance to share your views with america express your thoughts by filling out and mailing in the questionaire in the july issue results will be published m october courses focus on future for steelworkers ub to offer steelworkers classes in lackawanna a series of non-credit courses for steelworkers who are being displaced by plant layoffs will be offered as a public service by the state university at buffalo at lackawanna senior high school begin ning july 18th th courses open to members of the united steelworkers of america locals 1743 5578 and 6372 will include a re fresher course in business math and courses in job search skills small busi ness operations and intro duction to personal com puters a 1.00 charge will be levied at registration all course materials will be provided free certificates of attendance will be issued to individuals who attend all sessions of any course class size will be limit ed however and registra tion will be on a first come first served basis renewed education and retraining are some of the keys to future employ ment for those of us who are being displaced by layoffs in our industry richard corcoran staff representative for united steelworkers said he added that ub has devel oped the courses at no charge and the lackawan na high school has offered the use of its facilities for free eric streiff acting dean of continuing education at üb who is coordinating the course offerings noted that no state or federal training monies are avail able for these courses and that the steelworkers who are eligible for them are not receiving other types of benefits such as those available under the trade readjustment act we are trying to respond as well as we can to what we know is a need streiff comment ed the university is trying to offer hope for future employment to those people being affect ed by the changing economy union officials report that 2.300 members are eligible for the courses further information can be obtained from the united steelworkers local 1743 offices at 824-2242 j 1st black chairman of nys bd of public accountancy bert n mitchell man aging partner of mitchell titus & company one of the nation's fastest grow ing cpa firms has been elected chairman of the new york state board of public accountancy mr mithcell is the first black to head the 87-year old panel oldest of its kind in the nation he has been a member of the board for 8 years the new york state board of public account ancy is a 24-member board appointed by the new york state board of regents which regulates and licenses the practice of accountancy in new york state mr mitchell is also vice president and director of the new york state society of certified public accoun tants and was the first black to serve on the board of directors of the american institute of cer tified public accountants the largest and most prestigious organization in the profession mr mitchell said this honor is particularly mean inful to me to be elevated by one's peers in one's chosen profession and life's work is most gratifying i have spent most of my professional life trying to improve my profession and to open door for young minorities this new position challenges me to increase mv efforts mitchell/titus and company located at 2 park avenue corner of 33rd st in new york city was founded in 1973 it is one of the largest black owned accounting firms with offices in new york city and washington d c however its 7 partners and 65 staff members represent 20 different na tionalities and religions included among its 250 clients are some of the nation's largest corpora tions small businesses governments government agencies non-profit or ganizations and sports and entertainment personali ties robert titus senior partner whose name the firm bears said bert mitchell will make an effective chairman of the new york state board of public accountancy his commitment committee erie county clerk gene vieve m starosciak has been re-elected to the executive committee of the new york state asso ciation of county clerks for a two-year term the vote took place at the group's 62nd annual conference last week which was held in alex andria bay mrs staros ciak has been elected to a one-year term on the committee a year ago schenectady • county clerk merritt c willey was elected president of the association shriners give 4,000.00 to aid in cancer research mrs phyllis mccoy at right of new york city imperial deputy commaner ess of the imperial council of shriners presented a 4,000.00 check to dr charles r west center chief of neurosurgery and his associate dr chung i hong during a ceremony held recently at roswell park memorial institute the new york shriners council of officers and representatives of the imperial court daughters of lsis ladies auxiliary attended the presentation this is the sixth consecutive year that the shriners have donated funds to dr west to conduct research on brain tumor treatment the national shriners a non-profit organization and the buffalo order hadji temple 61 have been active in the fight against cancer since 1948 when they established the health and medical research fund to extend grants to physicians scientists and institutions committed to cancer research john h burkes dies suddenly funeral services will be held wednesday july 6 at 1 p.m from the h alfred lewis mortuary inc 968 jefferson aye for john h burkes mr burkes was born in elizabeth arkansas sept 16 1912 he was the son of the late carrie brown and john henry burkes he passed away suddenly on wednesday june 29 1983 mr burkes moved to buffalo in 1943 he was employed at the pillsbury company surviving him are a daughter mrs marion heard cottrell a son-in law james cottrell a son vernon frank a daughter in-law loretta frank a sister mrs lillian nash a brother-in-law nelson nash of san diego california four grandchil dren a dear friend mrs 25,000 grant from marine midland bankd the first such grant from private industry the governor also an nounced that the new york telephone co has agreed to loan one of its executives to the manage ment and productivity team to study the skate's . operation and manage ment of its fleet of ground vehicles the first half of a total 25,000 contribution from the marine midland bank has been received ma rine will submit the remaining 12,500 to the state next january in announcing the con tribution governor - cuomo stated this is a meaningful example of partnership between government and business this generous grant de rives from our joint recog nition that it is in the interests of us all — business labor and gov ernment alike for govern ment to operate as effi cently and to work as fuson day july 7th the buffalo bisons have officially proclaimed their ihursday july 7th double header against glens falls as sandy fuson day and club president bob rich jr is pleased with the early response the bisons set the date when sandy fuson died on june 8 after cerbral complication arose from toxemia after the birth to their first child sandy is the wife of bison pitcher robin fuson the bisons chose the holy 7th date in honor of sandy's 25th birthday the bisons will donate all gate proceeds from the july 7th game to the sandy fuson memorial fund which also was established after her death the fund has already generated close to 2,000 from friends and fans throughout the country a benefit game was held in sandy's honor recently in waterloo lowa which is where robin met his wife a similar game is planned in charleston w vir ginia which is the class aaa affiliate of the cleveland indians the response of the people has just been incredible robin said before leaving for the bisons current road trip it's been almost over whelming with the number of letters and packages i have received from people i don't even know i had heard how great people in buffalo are but it's a shame it takes a crisis like this to really see the good side of people the july 7th game will be the opener of a six-day homestand for the herd ihe doubleheader will begin at 6 p.m and an elaborate pre-game cere mony is scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m a celebrity softball game featuring members of the buffalo bills sabres and stallions will be held between games of the twinbill pizza hut restaurants have also taken an interest in the game by purchasing several hundred tickets for their employees and fami lies the restaurants also have donated several thousand coupons for 3 off a large pizza for the bisons to distribute to all patrons on july 7th the reponse from the community has just been grat said bison presi dent bob rich jr i was really heart broken when i witnessed what robin and his family went through during that period in early june for that young man to continue pitching this season is certainly a show of courage robin's baby a daugh ter the family has named lindsey ann was permit ' ted to leave the hospital last week she will stay with robin throughout the season after his wife's death robin moved into the home of bison general manager don colpoys the odd part of the new
