permit no 1314 buffalo new york independence day — 1983 on the fourth of july we celebrate the birth of our nation and those brave and patriotic americans who signed the declaration of independence and pledged their lives and fortunes to the cause of freedom 207 years ago today the document that ignited.the flames of liberty remains a symbol of our founding principles for people around the globe as abraham lincoln wrote the declaration of independence...gave liberty not alone to the people of this country but hope to all the world for all future time it...gave promise that in due time the weights would be lifted from the shoulders of all men and that all should have an equal chance the inspired men who signed the declaration dreamed bold dreams about what the new nation would become believing that a people could accomplish whatever they imagined if left to pursue their dreams without interference from an oppressive government our forefathers seized the opportunity freedom provided and built this great land of hope and prosperity today we honor their heroic spirit and the ideas that changed the world as we enjoy this traditional holiday let us reflect on our blessings and all the good things about life in these united states tom paine once wrote that not a place upon earth might be so happy as america for all our fellow americans nancy and i wish happiness always — ronald reagan - 1983 superstars program applications available mayor james d griffin announced the kick-off of the 1983 superstars program at a press confer ence held in his office at 10 a.m tuesday the superstars pro gram is an opportunity for youngsters from the ages of 9 through 16 to compete against other youngsters across the city in healthy athletic compe tition the superstars pro gram is co-sponsored by the xerox corporation and the buffalo division for - youth and is free to all city youngsters the program runs between july 6th and august 16th with a special superstars handicapped program to be held on july 19th and 20th for handicapped youth each year over 1,000 youth compete from the nine council districts with the district winners competing at the city finals the winners receive tee-shirts and tro phies and the grand champions will receive a 10-speed bike applications are avail able from the buffalo division for youth 2301 city hall michael morris 55-4174 and at local community centers throughout the city county to fund new training program nypirg to train 16 in ■energy conservation skills erie county executive edward j rutkowski has announced that the county will provide 49,000 to the new york public interest research group inc to train 16 unemployed per sons in energy conversa tion skills mr rutkowski said the nypirg was selected by the county's office of employment and training because of '' many years of experience in consumer energy * cevn*veisat*roii - edu cation training will be coordinated with the cen ter for applied research at buffalo state university the county executive commented that he hoped that this would be the start of a new training program for the unemployed in an expanding job market he noted that the program could be expanded to include industrial energy improvements and per haps the application of appropriate solar technolo gies the county strongly supports energy conserva tion because research has found that 30,000 homes are uninsulated in erie county costing consum ers well over 8 million per year mr rutkowski said weatherization can pro vide a local investment of 60 million creating 2,708 jobs over the neft ten years he added monesy aavesd on energy could be used to purchase local goods and services providing 25 million per year to the county's economy creat ing 1,250 jobs per year he noted industries also could reduce energy costs and become more competi tive he added the announcement was made at the nypirg energy conservation store 400 leroy avenue calvary to honor pastor saturday july 9th the calvary sabb jr remembering norman goldfarb by garfield hinton when norman goldfarb died early tuesday june 14 1983 our community lost a friend those of us who knew the man person ally and had worked with him these many years were especially grieved and could only wonder whence comes an other the facts of his life briefly stated he was a u b graduate he was 65 years of age survivors include his wife sophia two sons joel and ben a daughter beryl a sister minnie and a brother aaron he retired a year or so ago as assistant to the regional director of the national labor relations board and previously worked in personnel and labor relations at j n adam department store he loved his family dearly and often spoke of them he once told me the story of how when he was in the u s army the captain knowing he was jewish kept the applica tions to officers candidate school locs j locked in a drawer and out of his reach one weekend the captain was away an n co with no prejudice against jests got the key unlocked the desk and gave norm the neces sary application blanks norm filled them out more than met the qualifi cations and went on to o.c.s and became an officer i know where the keys are and 1 want to open the doors of opportunity for back people norm old me another time he said garfield if they weren't after you they'd be after us too bad more people don't realize that norm goldfarb worked tirelessly for school deseg regation and the equality of all co-chairman of the ' citizens council on hu man relations his activi ties included opening up jobs for minorities in downtown stores the budding trades end in other areas opening up the buffalo yacht club dty golf links the buffalo athletic club opposition to the use of lie-detector and drug-usage tests in connection with employ ment and better living although not a lawyer he was known to advise lawyers on what legally could and could not be done norm worked ceaselessly even from a painful sick bed he readily identified with black people and nothing made him happier than to strike a blow at prejudice - and discrimination ' he seemed to see himself aa a modern day john brown anxiously awaiting a chance to lead black people to freedom a rarely gifted man intellec tually he seemed to know everything though born a jew bis religion seemed to be the brotherhood of man he could prick the conscience of just about anybody when i lost my mother a year ago trying to console me norm regaled me with stories of his deported mother and welcomed me to a bachelor dinner if i didn't mind bis cooking dunn funeral services at delaware park memori al chapel rabbi martin goldberg of temple beth zion recited prayers in hebrew and road the 123 rd psalm p-srticipat ing in the service were two fellow c.c.h.r members marilyn hochfield and raphael dußard mr dußard told of a long list of civil rights activities engaged in by norman goldfarb includ ing the freedom of the golden tee club to con duct a tournament on city links the 1963 martin luther king march on city announces diploma help the city of buffalo's division for employment and training has an nounced its openings in its training services unit-de velopment studies pro gram the developmental studies program is design ed to help unemployed residents of the city of buffalo we do not have a high school diploma pre pare to take the general equivalency diploma exam the thirteen week train tog program is open to people 17 years old and out of school for one year or to anyone 18 years or older after successful completion of the develop mental studies program students could possibly be placed into other skills training in addition to providing proof of city residency applicants must also pro vide proof of their birth . date social security num ber u s citizenship and proof of the family income or source of support for the past six months applications are avail able monday through thursday between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m and 1 to 2 p.m the division for employment announc es that the first annual upstate new york minori ty trade show will be held wed july 20th at the sheraton inn in syracuse n y this minority trade show gives the minority business concerns an opportunity to meet repre sentatives of majority business and discuss their products and services on a one-to-one basis over 100 minority-owned com panies are expected to exhibit their wares and goldfarb succumbs norman golfarb 65 school desegregation acti vist who visited the board of human relations on the subject died in erie county medical center on tuesday june 14th he was co-chairman of the citizens council on human relations and a retired assistant to the regional director of the national labor relations board in the early 70s mr goldfarb and raphael dv bard played a major role to successful efforts to desegregate the buffalo public schools he also was involved in several civil rights suits involving discrimination in real estate and private club membership psc division to hold pre-hearing consumer protection meeting the near york state public service commis sion's consumer services division will hold a pre hearing meeting open to the community on the recent niagara mohawk power corp rate proposal and the rate setting process for utilities the informal session will start at 12 noon thurs july 7 at the erie county public library lafayette square buffalo it will precede the 1 p.m public statement hearing lisa rosenblum direc tor consumer services division richard king chief of the division's policy and compliance unit will join the presid ing administrative law judge and psc commis sioner to discuss how utility rates are establish ed how interested parties can become intervenors and how utility customers can take a more active role as consumer advocates this
