paid legitimate circulation woolworth's aids flood victims new york — it cost us money but we would do it again - the smiles were enough to carry us these were the words of aubrey c lewis vice president corporate liaison with f w wool worth co as he discussed this retailer's recent dona tion of 200,000 worth of children's clothing to flood victims in the greater new orleans area while words of appreci ation ha-e flowed from the mayor disaster assistance agencies and religious leaders in that city wool worth's role as good samaritan has been cited in quarters far beyond new orleans as well in his office high up in the historical woolworth building in new york city lewis proudly displays a framed letter which reads voluntarism and private sector initiatives lie very close to the heart of my administration wool worth's innovative re sponse in providing vital disaster relief tells me that the spirit thrives among the american peo ple i am proud to commend your find ex ample for the help and the hope you have shared with your fellow men thank you and god bless you signed ronald reagan the clothing woolworth provided was distributed to flood victim families through more than two dozen church and civic groups in new orleans it wasn't a simple matter of turning the goods over to the proper agencies how ever as lewis explained the merchandise was in a bonded warehouse in houston texas in that it represented goods in ex cess of-import quotas and could not be sold for at least six months even though we plan ned to give the clothes away for a good cause such a donation still required a waiver of import regulations by fed eral officials lewis said ' this was accomplished at zero hoar after art tcrgemt appeal went out from the new orleans mayor's office to u s customs dept officials in wash president lauded retailer's gift of giving in new orleans ington the woolworth dona tion was appreciated more by the community because it was not merchandise that otherwise would be discarded said the rev roger p morin of the new orleans catholic arch diocese's office of com munity affairs often the things that are given to the poor represent some thing people don't want anymore he said i'm convinced that private industry churches and community must work together lewis said of the clothing distribution effort we of wool worth are glad we were able to be of some assistance in this regard new orleans mayor dutch mortal summed up the woolworth gesture as a very remarkable and unique corporate ap proach to aiding the city's flood disaster victims signs require utilities to report on profits albany — legislation that would require gas and electric utilities to include plain language profit statements in their billing will be introduced in the assembly on monday by republican leader c d rapp rappleyea and assemblyman hyman miller the ranking republican on the assembly corporations authorities and public utilities committee similar legislation was passed unanimously by the state senate on june 14th the senate bill is sponsored by energy committee chairman dale volker the lack of information on the operating expenses and profits of utilities aggravates the suspicions and frustrations of the utility customer those paying the bills deserve to know how their dollars are being used the utility truth in profits bill will conveniently and clearly provide con sumers with such information rapp leya stated state law already authorizes the public service commission to regulate from assembly minority leader c d rapp " rappleyea the format content and clarity of utility company billings and monthly state ments yet state law also restricts the disclosure of some information that would enhance the consumer's aware ness of utility economics miller explained truth in profits legislation would require simple graphic illustra tions of utility profits — delivered along with your gas or electric bill it will provide consumers with the date they need to make informed judgments on itility issues miller continued while there are some sweeping proposals to improve the consumer's role in utility regulations this relatively simple measure can significantly en hance public debate on rate-making questions rappeyea said in view of the unanimous bipartisan support for the measure in the senate we hope the assembly
