23 wednesday june 1-7 1983 annual medgar evers dinner slated this year the buffalo chapter naacp will ob serve its 17th annual medgar evers dinner the affair will be held in the golden ballroom of the hotel sutler on sun june 12th at 6:30 p.m the guest speaker will be thomas i atkins general counsel of the naacp and naacp special con tribution fund the distinguished attor ney holds the doctor of jurisprudence degree from harvard law school this year the buffalo branch naacp will honor five persons at the 17th medgar evers dinner to i be held sun june 12th at 6:30 p.m in the golden ballroom of the statler hotel the keynote speaker will be thomas 1 atkins general counsel of the naacp and for the naacp special contribu tion fund honorees are delmar mitchell council presi dent monica anderson thomas fricano mrs carolyn jones for the reed street watch com mittee and dr robert j grantham chicago's loss has been buffalo's gain delmar l mitchell who a good many years ago left the windy city to settle in the city of good neighbors is the recipient of the medgar evers civil rights award sponsored by the buffalo branch naacp mitchell president of the buffalo common council is one of buffalo's best known and most and has received honorary doctorates from the new england school of law and northeastern university a 1957 indiana university graduate in 1963 he earned an m.a degree at harvard university in eco nomics and politics of the middle east atty atkins has a rich work experience having served as a member of the governor's cabinet as secretary for communi ties and development commonwealth of massa vember 1974 he was officially elected to that post for a one year unexpired term the following year nov 1925 he ran for the full 4-year-term and in a city-wide election was overwhelmingly elected with a thirty thousand vote majority over his opponent in 1979 mit chell was reelected council president mit chell is married to the former carol easiey prin cipal of school 71 his older son delmar jr is a major in the united states air force playwright son joseph is the recipient of the lorraine hansberry award in drama gregory is a california business man darrel the youngest son is a canisius college sophmore one of western new york's most effective lead ers delmar mitchell is highly respected for his balanced views during his tenure he has been an knowledgeable politicians a close friend to the late hubert humphrey mit chell counts among his friends presidents and poets alike he served 4 years as a member of the erie county board of supervi sors 4 years as masten district councilman he was elected councilman at-large three times during 7 of his council manic years he served as legislative committee chairman in addition he served as president-pro tempore 4 years from 1970 through 1973 mit chell was majority leader of the buffalo common council march 25 1974 mr mitchell became president of the council he was elected by a unanimous majority of votes cast by the council during a city-wide election in no atkins to keynote 5 to be cited chusetts a lecturer in urban politics wellesley college a member of the boston city council and as executive secretary of the boston naacp among other activities a native of elkart indiana he is the son of the rev and mrs norse pierce atkins happily married atty and mrs atkins are the parents of three children trena tod aaron and thomas jr among his civic activi inspiration to the people of buffalo and has been an integral part of the city's forward movement this year's youth awardee is monica an derson it is no surprise that monica at 16 already has made a name for herself the nichols school junior is surround ed by good examples mrs beatrice anderson her mother is special coordinator of consumer affairs national fuel and has just received an m.s degree in economics from the university of buffalo brother charles jr at 19 is princeton univer sity's youngest graduate and having been accepted by six medical schools is leaning toward john hop kins in baltimore three younger siblings are no less promising monica won two act so places one in drama tics and the other in oratory and will participate ties are or have been chairman of the fcc sub-committee for local state and federal catv regulation memberships include harvard board of overseers massachusetts center for political stu dies national center for equal business opportu nity board of public broadcasting and a mem ber of the board of directors federal reserve bank of boston in the naacp national convention in new or leans in july she is a graduate of the john robert powers modeling school and has modeled for seventeen maga zine she received the hugh brian award for lead ership at nichols and represented buffalo am herst and clarence at the new york conference in rochester other activi ties and awards are most enterprising debutante of 1982 buffalo chapter alpha kappa alpha vice president of american field services at nicholas school recipient of a 1,000 scholarship for the pamela greensby award prize winner in the afro-american historical association's carter g woodson essay contest volunteering activities in clude the red cross tutoring and helping senior citizens monica is studying chemistry at the univer sity of buffalo this sum mer and is seriously considering a career in psychiatry human relations award recipient this year is thomas m fricano he is western new york area director of the interna tional union united auto mnt-itl i i./ii ait agricultural implement workers of america u.a.w - region 9 this area has more than 42,000 members and extends from rochester to pennsy vania in 1975 fricano was appointed to the staff of the united auto workers as an international repre sentative serving local unions three years later in 1978 region 9 director edward gray appointed him to his present post fricano was employed 16 years at the chevrolet tonawanda forge plant as • a skilled tradesman be fore his appointment to the u.a.w staff a 1959 erie community college grad uate he later enrolled at state university college evenings graduating in 1975 with a bachelor of science degree in educa tion with a major in vocational-technical edu cation his various boards in clude the united way buffalo-erie county labor management council erie county industrial development agency child and family services blue cross of wny health care plan and hospice . a life-long resident of western new york mr fricano lives in amherst with his wife susan and three sons thomas david and john two community service awards are being present ed to the reed street watch committee repre sented by mrs caroline c jones and the other one to dr robert j grantham assistant professor of the division of community psychiatry at the state university of new york at buffalo mrs jones is one of the founding members of the reed street watch com mittee within a year and a-half the membership has grown from 5 to 87 members the unity and sustained efforts of the group are due in no small measure to the energetic determined activity of mrs jones mrs jones and her delmar mitchell thomas i atkins mrs carolyn c jones monica anderson dr robert j grantham thomas m fricano rev horace billy johnson honored promiseland qeptist church mulberry and high streets recently honored rev horace billy johnson for religious and community service y rev leeland jones served as the evening-speaker remarks were given by city apd county officials rev johnson serced as assistant pastor of the church under the leadership of the late dr t davis founder and later served as interim pastor after his death rev johnson's family has also been active in the community his dad the late rev s o b johnson was pastor of concert the central city choir's annual spring concert will be held sun june 5 at 7:30 p.m at holy trinity lutheran church 1080 main st between summer and north sts in buffalo guests will include larry dabney lauretta anderson karl singletary and dancers liberty sil ver simone appleby and many other pleasant sur prises they will all appear under the musical and artistic direction of the magnificant jacquelyn hemphill peoples the public is invited to attend the concert of the spring season the donation is 5.50 workshop to aid in informing on hazardous waste regulations a workshop to help small companies and mu nicipal officials under stand complex state and federal hazardous waste regulations was announc ed by county executive edward j rutkowski the 4-hour session co-spon sored with the erie-ni agara chapter of the new york state society of professional engineers will be held in room 1403 of the rath building at 8:30 a.m on june 15th the workshop is need ed mr rutkowski said to help managers of small companies interpret the hundreds of pages of state and federal regulations mr rutkowski also stress ed the need for county and local government officials to know if they generate hazardous waste and how to comply with the regula tions all participants at the workshop which is sup ported by a grant from the national society of profes sional engineers will re ceive a guidance manual which will be discussed during the sessions the erie county dept of environment and planning will accept registrations until june bth speakers at the work shop will include operators of hazarous and non-haz arous solid waste disposal facilities hazardous waste management consultants and county and state regulatory officials mr rutkowski also said that erie county will help any company or munici pality requesting assis tance to comply with regulations this will be done through the county's ongoing industrial assis tance program in the department of environ ment and planning pete suggs noted musician dies i**e suggs 74 succumbed may 23rd 1983 after a lengthly illness in the bufalo general hospital where he had been confined since new year's eve suggs came to buffalo in 1935 where he made a name for himself as a drummer at one time he was considered to be one of the top drummers in the area he had seen service with such musical organi zations as flecher hen derson cab calloway and noble sissle he formed his own combination while in buf falo and played such popular places as the moonglo the broadway cotton club little harlem and the glen casino and heads adams band he became a life-time mem ber of the colored musi cians club no 433 pete also doubled on the zylophone survivors are three sis ters mrs gaynelle edwards mrs goldie williams and mrs willa mac p.m a dance fashion show poetry demonstrations games marital arts exer cise individual artists jazz reggae popular bands and field entertain ment in the martin luther king park and along fillmore aye from 3 to 5 p.m a tennis exhibition will be held in the park and from 4-6 p.m boxing will be held at the basketball courts in the mlx jr park on sunday june 19th from 12 noon to 8 p.m a dance fashion show poetry demonstration games martial arts exer cises etc will be held in the park and along fill more aye from 1-3 p.m a tennis exhibition in the park 2-6 p.m fitness testing high blood screening lead poison testing at the ymca and first aid cancer society and planning at the mlx jr park casino from 3-7 p.m a basketball exhibi tion will be held in the park food art exhibits and information booths will be available both days of the festival alexandra fund-raiser set the committee to elect alexandra is sponsoring a beer blast to raise funds for the election of alexan dra lawkowski schmid
