itan txi san francisco resident to receive award mary helen rogers of san francisco calif has been selected to receive the 1983 rosa parks award sponsored by women in community service inc one of the largest non-profit volun teer organizations in the country rosa parks referred to m the mother of the modern freedom move ment will present the award to rogers at the 18th annual wics hoard and corporation awards banquet in buffalo on may m the award is named in honor it mrs parks who dramatically influenced the civil rights movement in 1955 when she refused bo give up her seat to a white man on a segregated w '" montgomery ala p rogers too has influ enced the civil rights movement as well as i movements for mental health tenant's rights crime prevention and education during her 20 years as a volunteer in the western addition com munity of san francisco ? | mary helen rogers is truly deserving of the rosa - b*rks award said mar ■villalobos wics i'n-s hfent she is a single hrent with 12 children and 15 grandchildren who h*\s dedicated the past 20 bears of her life to enhancing the quality of jlife for so many others as founder and advo cate of the tenant rights r organization she has geerved as spokesperson for poor urban residents with i housing problems f threatened with a nassive redevelopment plan the western addition com • munity mobilized under the leadership of mrs rogers to halt destruction of low income housing this protest resulted in legislation to insure citizen participation in future redevelopment programs mrs rogers was instru mental in developing the first residential program for adolescents and the first 24-hour crisis center she continues to advocate for children youth elder ly and families while currently serving as a member of the westside community advistory board the honoree has played a major role in establish ing the audrey l smith developmental center a demonstration project pro viding child care for infants of single parents who live in public housing projects she also founded operation contact a crime prevention program to deter crime in housing projects quality eduction for black youths has been a direct result of mrs roger's outspoken criti cism of the school system her persistence helped achieve a moratorium on group intelligence testing in the san francisco public schools mrs rogers has been instrumental in securing affordable housing for seniors and low-income families said joseph crafton executive direc tor of the l smith development center she has assisted in developing and imple menting training pro for the democratic nomina tion for the erie county legislature's sth district seat representing buffalo and cheektowaga the prominent local businesswoman pledged to be an available and visible legislator who is responsible to the needs of the community she said that since she lives in cheektowaga and operates businesses on buffalo's east side she his a special insight into the needs and concerns of the people of the district with her husband bill mrs schmid runs alexan dra's restaurant and kor bel remodeiers both lo cated on broadwp.y in addition she finds time for numerous community ac tivities serving as a member of the broadway market neighborhood in formation center and general pulaski associa tion boards of directors among others she is also chairman of the loyalty day nowak will receive a doctorate of humane let ters from daemen college enator moynihan will also receive the presi dent's award from dr robert s marshall dae men college president this will take place at 3 p.m on sun may 15 in the kleinhans music hall at symphony circle in buffalo u s senator moynihan is the senior senator from new york state he was elected in 1976 and re-elected in 1982 the first democrat from the state to win a second six-year term in the senate during the post-war years mr moynihan is a former president of the united nations security council he received his bache lor's degree cum laude from tufts university and his ph.d from the flet cher school of law and diplomacy congressman nowak was first elected to con gress in 1974 prior to this mr nowak was erie county
