will present the rosa 1 parks award to mary helen rogers of san francisco california the award is given in recogni tion of ' extraordinary acts of ordinary people rosa parks dramatically influenced the civil rights movement in 1955 when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus in mont gomery alabama the late martin luther king jr on speaking of her said her courage and dedication will be an inspiration to generations yet unborn the rosa parks award is the highest honor bestowed by women in community service inc wics a coalition of five national women's groups with a membership of several million founded in 1964 wics is comprised of the na tional councils of negro jewish and catholic wo men church women united and american gi forum women through its extensive will be opened april 26 to purchase local natural gas supplies for county facilities at poten tially substantial savings to taxpayers the bids will be sought under a directive issued march 25 by mr rutkow ski his directive followed a march 10th order by the state public service com mission allow ing large customers to substitute i local gas for higher-priced supplies from out-of-state producers the bid documents have been mailed by purchasing director rich ard heller to local produc ers and we are advertising the bid opening we will ask for prices which can remain in effect for a year bids will be accepted from a single company or more acting as a consortium mr rutkowski said erie county spent 2.4 million last year on natural gas costing about 6 per 1,000 cubic feet mr rutkowski estimates that the price could be sliced by more than half and provide savings up to $ 5 million erie county medical cen ter and erie community college are the county's largest users many local wells have been curtailed by national fuel because of the utility's commitment to buy from out-of-state sup pliers if we can reopen these local wells we will be encouraging local em ployment and pumping money into the local economy mr rutkowski said if erie county wells can't supply the county's needs the rutkowski order allows the purchase of supplies from bidders located here in neighbor ing service has been awarded to welch's energy inc of buffalo it is the largest contract rts has awarded to a minority business firm valued in excess of six million dollars over a three-year period present for the official signing of the contract were from left melvin henoing rochester-genesee regional transportation authority minority business enterprise office christopher mulholland r-grta director of finance robert welch president of welch's energy inc and john canity r-grta executive director manager rts fuel contract given to minority firm regional transit service of rochester has awarded a contract to welch's energy inc of buffalo to supply both gasoline and diesel fuel for the rts fleet for a period of up to three 3 years the contract is the largest rts has ever awarded to a minority business enterprise mbe in announcing the award to welch's energy john a garrity executive director/general manager of the rochester genesee regional transportation authority states that the award of this contract valued in excess of six million dollars over a three year period significantly contributes the r-grta's continuing efforts to support minority business enterprises mbe in addition melvin henning r-grta's minority business enterprise officer states that r-grta and rts have developed and implemented several additions to its mbe program to assist minority and women-owned businesses in participating more fully in its procurement activities this award of a major contract ot a minority firm is a result of these efforts robert welch president of welch's energy inc comments that the award is an outstanding achievement not just for my firm but for the evolution and development of minority business enterprise in the upstate new york area i am pleased with the goodrich st has been awarded a 36,550 grant from the helene fuld health trust the grant will be used to provide computer hard ware and library books for the benefit of student nurses enrolled in the three-year diploma pro gram at the school johanna broske pf.d dean of the school ex pressed her appreciation of the grant noting that the additon of the wang word processor will help in providing the
