the need for increased parental involvement in the public schools and how to achieve it is the subject of a report just published by the national school hoards association nsba the evidence is overwhelming that the family's active participation in us children s education increases student achievement and the quality of schools says nsba president leonard rovins this report draws upon the advice of experts research and current school practices to help encourage greater involvement now and in the future the report was issued in conjunc tion with the nationwide observance of american education week nov 13-19 which nsba co-sponsors entitled first teachers parental involvement in the public schools the 47-page monograph is divided into seven chapters that examine tin benefits of parent involvement why many parents are not involved recommended models for encouraging involvement programs that haw proven successful and the policy implications tor local school boards also included are sample school policies a policy checklist and resources for school board members by creating a positive learning en vironment at home and establishing high expectations for their children parents lay the groundwork for subse quent achievement in school the report states among ways recommended to improve student achievement at home set specific times for meals homework and bedtime monitor the amount of lime watching tv provide the proper books and a place to study limit time spent on after-school jobs discuss school-related events and help students meet their classroom deadlines the report also stresses the impor tance oi parent **. _***... uivoiveu at school suggested are such activities as helping teachers in the classroom on class trips and with student social events assisting administrators and teachers in the library cafeteria play ground computer lab or other areas that require adult supervision and working with the parent organization and school administration in such activi ties as fund raising community relations and political awareness the report says schools can facilitate involvement by inviting par ents to classroom visitations joining their children for lunch planning pot-luck dinners conducting evening events or holding a weekend open house the increase in the numbers of working motuers • • tue report notes means that fathers must be expected to assume a greater responsibility for their children's education for example fathers can be encouraged to serve on prent organization boards visit class rooms or serve as room parents many school districts already have successful parent involvement programs the report notes hut it cites a number of trends making it more difficult for jit's the law it's now law that all cloth ing made in this country be labeled made in the usa the label must be in the neck of the garment or conspicu oualy placed on garment and packaging mail-order cata logs and ads are also required to state whether products are domestic or imported accord ing to recent public opinion polls this should soon have a healthy impact on the us eco nomy in the form of increased sales of american-made goods • • t surveys indicate that given a choice most amer icans would rather buy prod ucts made in the usa reports the railed with pride in usa council the roper or ganization polled 2,000 people who were shown a dozen labels the made in usa label was the top choice of 95 percent of those ques tioned a gallup poll found american clothing favored by 75 percent of those inter viewed • • • the new labeling law will make it much easier for con sumer to identify american made clothing and give them a better opportunity to com pare american nude prod ucts with imports publication meets with tremendous success the rev calvin l sherrell announced this week that he was bringing the remaining 10.000 free copies of his 8-page informative copyright black history publication into the buffalo area lor free distribution to black organizations and the black churches although the first 5.000 copies of the 10.000 he published were first distributed in the buffalo area churches he later distributed thousands of copies personally in atlanta montgom ery tuskegee and other areas of the south philadelphia chicago - the rockford area of illinois toledo cleveland troy dayton and other areas of ohio in new york state he also said that his publication was received in the rochester syracuse areas along with the olean jamestown and elmire areas of the southern tier of new york rev sherrell said that the thing that surprised him most was that the people of the deep south showed more personal concern for his publication than in the north he said that all of his publications were given away free of charge he never asked for one dime from anyone he replied i do know this much if i have helped somebody along the way then my living will not have been in vain continuing rev sherrell said that hundreds of free copies of his publication were mailed to all forty of new york's maximum/minimum secur ity libraries and that many of the stale prison librarians wrote thank you letters printed on the state prison's letterhead he also received thank you letters from a number of federal level officials of washington d c along with a letter of thanks from the white house this writing on black history deals exclusively with blacks between 1770 to 1799 interested churches should write directly to rev calvin sherreu c/o po.b 930 buffalo n y 15205 for free distribution of the last 10,000 free copies rev calvin l sherrell parent involvement — see page 7 see page 2 see page 3 see page 7
