niagara region tribute to dr king opens on capitol hill in honor of dr martin luther king jr and in commemoration of the 1963 civil rights march on washington congress man john lewis d-ga will sponsor hand in hand for justice a historical exhibit focusing dr king's leadership of the civil rights movement congressman lewis was the youngest of the na tional leaders of the 1963 march on washington and was the chairman of the student non-violent coordinating committee at the time of the march the visual tribute to dr king will be displayed in the rotunda of the cannon house office bldg first street and independence avenue se from aug 22-27th the exhibit will be introduced to the public at a 5 p.m reception on aug 22nd speaking at the recep tion will be moshe aumann consul general embassy of israel con gressman walter faun troy id-dc jess hordes associate director wash ington office anti-de famation league allen jackson deputy execu tive director martin lu ther king jr federal holiday commission and stephen silbiger wash ington respresentative american jew congress ; brad minis legislative director and congress man lewis will host the program hand in hand for justice presents photo graphs and historic texts on the highlights of king's career and message it shows jewish support of the civil rights movement and depicts how dr king is honored in israel it has been on display throughout the united states and was produced tribute to king the rev milton williams former buffalo cleric becomes bishop at the 43rd quadrennial session of the african methodist episcopal zion church convening in charlotte north carolina july 25th thru aug sth the rev milton a wil liams was elevated to the office of bishop within the african methodist episco pal zion church his assignment by the church will carry him to england and ghana where he will preside over the i>ondon-birmingham conference and the west and east ghana confer ences respectfully this election follows over two decades of loyal and com mitted service to kingdom building under the chris tian banner bishop williams will serve the 12th episcopal district along with his wife lula g williams mis sionary supervisor the rev williams had served for seventeen and a half years in the western new york area as both pastor of durham memorial and shaw memorial churches and presiding elder of the rochester-syracuse-buf rev williams bishop milton a williams wedding bells to chime for couple mr and mrs george scott announce the marriage of their daughter anita j scott mr and mrs james moore are comes from wash ington d c where she worked in various adminis trative capacities at the d c general hospital for 8 and one-half years most recently as chief of man agement assistance and review before that she was a medical technologist for 18 years working in various hospitals of the capitol including walter reed army medical cen ter georgetown univer sity and howard hospital she holds both a mas ter's degree in business administration from how ard university with em phasis on health services administration and an undergraduate degree in psychology and urban planning from the univer sity of the district of columbia she also is a graduate of medical technology and is certified in genetic coun seling in her new position at the erie county medical enter she will be respon sible for varied depart ments which include the emergency department outpatient services ambu latory surgery and a new burn treatment center on its completion among her numerous professional associations is the national association ella gilbert rev bennett smith elected to national office the rev dr bennett w smith sr pastor of the saint john baptist church 184 goodell st was elected 2nd vice president of the 1.5 million member progressive na tional baptist convention inc in their annual meeting august 7-12 in kansas city missouri dr smith will serve as a stewartship specialist in his new capacity with the convention using the book authored by him titled handbook on tithing the progressive nation al baptist convention is headquartered in wash ington d c and repre sents over 1300 churches nation wide candidate deplores dukakis attitude towards emotional illness dr lenora fulani the independent candidate for president of the united states has criticized dem ocratic party presidential nominee michael dukakis for his insensitivity and ignorance in respond ing to charges that he had suffered from depression and that he had received psychiatric treatment mr dukakis who initially refused to release his medical records has denied that he was ever depressed dr fulani who holds a doctorate in develop mental psychology and is the director of a network of community mental health clinics located in the inner city communities of new york city noted that while it's well and good for dukakis to say he doesn't suffer from de pression there are sub stantial numbers of ameri cans who do his response displays an insensitivity to those people who have suffered emotional dis tress and have sought help like many people in this country she added 1 have gone for help with emotional issues when i needed it it's a whole lot better than going to an astrologer moreover mr dukakis insistence that he never needed and never sought help is typical of the white american male's obsession with erie county district attorney and city and county court judges at the 1490 center 1490 jefferson avenue saturday august 13th from 10:30 a.m until 2:30 p.m before a standing room only crowd co-moderator eva doyle gave opening instructions each candidate will make a three minute opening state ment after the opening statement the media will ask one question within a minute and the candidate will have two minutes to answer and the other candidate will have one minute for rebuttal when that portion is over we will turn it over to the audience i have a sign-up sheet here and we
