the momentous presidential campaign waged by jesse jackson in 1988 thousands of his supporters are expected to pour into atlanta to witness the climax at the democratic national convention the omni convention center site of the democratic national convention dnci will be restricted pri marily to delegates and alternates and have very limited room for observers for this reason the jackson campaign has planned an ambitious pro gram of activities for its supporters the jackson action atlanta agenda as it is being called will be held from sat july 16th to thurs july 21 ron brown jackson's convention manager and strategist has signed ron daniels to plan and coordinate activities for the week daniels is deputy campaign manager and serves as coordinator of the southern regional activities for super tuesday daniels stated that our goal is to put together the most outstanding and positive program possible that will en courage our supporters to continue the valuable work that we have done the events planned for non-delegates are not a protest of the dnc daniels pointed out on saturday july 16th a major welcome has been planned for jackson's arrival in atlanta the jackson action express a caravan of cars and buses will leave chicago on wed july 13th making several stops along the way and arrive in atlanta on saturday morning a keep hope alive ' rally will begin at 2 p.m that will feature speakers singers and other entertain ers it is being organized by rev cameron alexander president of the georgia state baptist convention and rev jasper williams of the salem baptist church in atlanta during the week the campaign has scheduled a wide-range series of forums workshops rallies and other activities . the forums and workshops will happen from i to 5 p.m monday thru thursday under the title of the jackson action atlanta agenda the topics will include a summation of the campaign and a vision of the work ahead development of a humane national budget a new direction fur 11 s foreign policy and political empower ment for the ' locked-out through the expansion of democracy ron brown lias also assigned a representative from the campaign to give daily briefings to non delegates on convention events an impressive list of academics and political activists have been brought together to conceive and implement the forums and workshops this includes ron walters howard university dr linda williams joint center for political studies dr james turner cornell uni versity kalhy flewellen american friends service committee mtangulizi sanyika national economic develop ment and law center lezlie bakerville national black leadership roundtable damn smith executive director of the washington office on africa dr jean simla world council of churches to combat racism and angela sanbrano committee in solidarity with the peoples of xl salvador in monday from 3-5 p.m a rally will be held to celebrate the 70th birthday of jailed african national congress leader — nelson mandela in unity with countless other celebrations around the world the rally will honor his strength mid commitment and highlight the fight for his freedom and that of other political prisoners in south africa on tuesday evening an anti-drug program has been scheduled the event will include many young people who will deliver strong anti-drug messages on thursday i young adult political caucus will he held that will discuss how to involve young people in the political arena mabel thomas and cleo fields two young elected officials from georgia and tennessee respectfully will coor dinate the meeting the campaign will also produce a daily newsletter and operate an infor mation center during the dnc other events which include a possible youth march against drugs and a labor rally are being planned according to daniels the campaign wants people to leave atlanta with the information and inspiration to con tinue the struggle for peace and justice he stated that we want to distinguish our events and views from those who are coming to atlanta to exploit rev jackson's name and work we want our supporters to know that only those events and activities that i have described are sanctioned today announced that dae men college 4380 main st amherst has been awarded a 1988-89 action grant in the amount of 30,000 this grant from the federal domestic vol unteer agency for student community service will allow for the expansion and development of the newly created community service office at daemen college ms donna kelsch the director of the community service office offers stu dents and staff informa tion and referrals on the hundreds of volunteer opportunities that exist in western new york the purpose of this department is to encour age students to help those in need through styles rogers were held sat july 9 at 11 a.m from friendship raptist church 402 clinton st the rev a charles ware pastor officiated mrs rogers was born on jan 5 1911 in mound bayou mississippi to the late mr and mrs b d styles she passed away tuesday july 5 19881 at 7:06 p.m in sheehan memorial hospital mrs rogers moved to buffalo in 1940 and joined friendship baptist church she was an ardent worker in god's vineyard was a member of the senior choir no 1 the mass choir and the united choirs serving as mass choir treasurer for many years she was also a staunch supporter of the church's programs she was united in matrimony to cleveland dorsey to this union a son and daughter were born she was later married to lee rogers who passed away in 1975 her survivors are a son genorval roosevelt dorsey an aunt irene slaughter two grandchil dren whom she reared genorval dorsey and bar netta d pearson two nieces six nephews four great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and wedding anniversary the rev joseph e davis and wife geneva l will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary july 23rd at st john baptist church 184 good ell st at 4 p.m they were the first couple to be married at the church when it was located at 92 monroe st on july 23 1938 the late founder and pastor of st john the rev b c mccarley officiated at the first formal wedding in his church (' saturday they will return to st john to renew their vows with the pastor the rev bennett w smith officiating the original brides maids mrs janie peter son mrs rebecca brown mrs mary b pierce and ms grace shallowhorn will participate in the ceremony charles pleasant thomas j mccarley also attendants in the original wedding and julius a beckham and king peter son will stand in for zellie down and harvey aiken the bestman and ma tron of honor will be mr and mrs washington bennett the late james h mitchell and mrs ida mccarley the bride's sister were the former maid of honor and best man due to illness
