route for a parade and elect a malik and malika king and queen to officiate over the festivities jefferson avenue was the site the route was from war memorial stadium and best street down jefferson to east ferry ending on fillmore aye juneteenth is not a date or place but a spirit said founding member claudia sims when it was moved to martin luther king park in the third year the location of the juneteenth parade must be determined by the living pattern of the people many white leaders those whom they appoint over programs that service poor people and self-appointed black leaders who are afraid to walk in the ghetto at night predicted anarchy however to almost everyone's surprise people went out of their way to be kind and helpful to each other all of the majority media predicted a crowd of under 10.000 but more than 50,000 beautiful people of many ethnic backgrounds learned about african american culture and history and themselves in an environment of peace and harmony in 13 years with over one and one-half million participants according to some observers there have not been a total of 100 arrests during all of the juneteenths including drunks there do not seem to be ugly
