region rochester minority coalition schedules community meetings does the president have to be white marching on washington then and now chisholm to speak shirley chisholm pro fessor and former new york congresswoman fighter for racial equality will be the guest speaker for the city-wide obser vance memorial program recognizing the 20th year of the assassination of dr martin luther king jr this program will be sponsored by the erie county chapter of the southern christian lead ership conference and the buffalo area metropo litan ministry the program will be held on sun april 17 at 5 p.m at christ evangelical lutheran church 768 broadway corner of fox the public is encouraged to attend this program there is no admission charge along with keynote w-xxm . shirley chis holm will be many other outstanding members of the local religious and the political community other speakers will be the rev herbert v reid rev chuck white rabbi herzig and many other members of the clergy elected pel choir western new york singers association and new beginnings shirley chisholm bush receives wny support vice president george bush visited buffalo wed april 13 to urge all republicans to elect carol a siwek valeric a leuthe and seymour h knox iv as alternates and norma somer dom inic s telesco and george siembida as alternates to the republican conven tion in the april 19th primary all six are supporting bush for presi dent unfortunately repub lican county chairman victor farley is spending 20,000 which the party cannot afford to continue the campaign to elect kemp delegates even though kemp himself has endorsed bush farley's questionable tactics have left the voters in a quandry even if the kemp delegates won they would go to new orleans as uncommitted dele gates because their candi date has withdrawn mrs siwek asserted george bush is the obvious winner of the republican nomination it's important therefore to send bush delegates to the convention to help bush set his agenda and launch his campaign sending uncommitted delegates at this stage would only be counterpro ductive mrs leuthe chairman of the republi can party in cheektowaga stated when we appraised the bush campaign staff of the local situation the vice president decided to visit here personally to thank his delegates for circulat ing petitions and placing his name on the ballot former assemblywoman siwek explained while he's here cam paigning for us we'll also put in a plug for jack kemp to be his vice president mrs leuthe and mrs siwek said the bottom line is that george bush is going to be our next president and erie county in spite of farley should rally behind him by voting for bush delegates on april 19th they concluded church leaders mark 20th year the second temple baptist church began ob servance of the 20th anni versary of pastor and mrs samuel b sutton with a worship service on sunday evening apr 10th at 7:30 p.m with the rev w l jones and the mt ararat baptist church on sun apr 17th at 4 p.m the rev joe fisher and the pleasant grove baptist church will be the guests on friday apr 22 a banquet will be held at the church in the sutton dining room the cele bration will end on is in charge of public rela tions and thomas shep pard is general chairper son nat'l cancer institute celebrates minority cancer awareness week the national cancer institute encour ages everyone to celebrate minority cancer awareness week april 17-23 this is an especially good time to promote cancer prevention in the black community because blacks get cancer and die from it more often than other groups in this country many blacks think there is nothing that can be done to prevent cancer but the truth is cancer may be the most preventable of all chronic diseases most cancers can be cured if found early and treated right away that is the reason the national cancer institute wants everyone to learn the j yuj ttit i/ditvtti dthp.icr see a doctor regularly a doctor can find early signs of cancer before the patient notices them it is estimated that 80 percent of all cancers can be prevented if people make certain changes in the way they live one of the most important ways to prevent cancer is to quit smoking smoking has been linked to cancers of the lung larynx throat bladder kidney and pancreas chewing tobacco and using snuff also can lead to some types of cancers the risks of cancer are even greater if a person smokes and drinks alcohol or works with dangerous materials in addition pregnant women who smoke i lave a greater chance of losing their babies or delivering unhealthy babies eating healthy can also help prevent cancer fatty foods such as coldcuts salt port and sausage may add to the risk of cancers of the colon breast prostate and uterus east more foods low in fat such as lean meats fish poultry without the skin rice spaghet ti skim milk and fruits and vegetables broil or bake fish and poultry try steaming vegtables rather than frying eating more whole gram breads and cereals peas beans and lots of fruits and vegetables also may reduce the risk of cancer during minority cancer awareness week communities across the country are sponsoring health 1-800-4-cancer 1-800-422-6237 new stadium inaugurated with full house first win pilot field buffalo's new baseball stadium had its grand opening thurs day afternoon and wit nessed a crowd of 19,500 spectators everyone was in high gear and excited about the new and beautiful stadi um with their sights on major league baseball , the bisons playing den ver won their first home game by a score of 1 to nothing the new stadium will help boast the economy in the downtown area in creasing business by the millions mayor james griffin and governor mario cuo 1 mo were involved in tossing out the first ball and looked good presi dential candidates vice president george bush and jesse jackson also viewed the new stadium • while in buffalo friendship house to give annual awards dinner friendship house of western new york will celebrate its nineth an nual awards dinner on wed apr 20th at 6 p.m in the friendship house auditorium 264 ridge road ceasar perales com missioner of the nys department of social ser vices will be the keynote speaker awards will be present ed to the following youth award recipients tara connie jackson and gina d broswell these youth have demon strated enormous growth in their academic and social activities the community service recipient is sarah l lewis director of commu nity service at channel 4 wivb-tv this award allows friendship house to give thanks to a person who has demonstrated an eagerness to assist the agency in its endeavors the business award recipient is david barker of the absolute mainten ance supplies inc this award is given to a business person who has extended tie and service to help improve the quality of life for all the president award will be given to cesar perales commissioner of new york state depart ment of social services this award is presented to an individual who has improved the quality of life and made available re sources that are needed to operate an agency such as friendship house he has committed to improve the delivery of social services making it more accessible to a larger constituency jackson met with rousing ovation presidential candidate the rev jesse jackson received a smashing standing ovation thursday morning apr 14th as he addressed the buffalo teachers federation at kleinhans music hall an entire packed house of blacks and whites applauded and cheered as rev jackson presented his remarks johnson here for area club opening appearances on friday apr 15th nationally known model movie star and singer ms beverly johnson will be the honored guest at two local events she will attend and participate as a honored guest at the grand opening at jerry butler's big play supper club at 2987 bailey aye in buffalo in 1978 one of buffalo's most prominent figures jerry butler who is an outs'anding sports figure playing footoal tor the american football confer ence buffalo bills estab lished a supper club in the north bailey area the big play supper club for many years after its establish ment provided good food entertainment and recrea tion for many residents of buffalo and the surround ing area in 1985 the club shut its doors with intents to expand its then daily over-crowded facility after several years of working towards that ob jective the club is now ready to open its doors to the public again ms johnson will also make an appearance at the peppermint lounge and restaurant with a group known as the friends of the buffalo experience the group whose purpose is to raise monies to assist african-american busi nesses is holding a cocktail party featuring music by johnny leverett greater buffalo niagara billy graham cru sade august 1-7 in pilot field buffalo's new down town baseball stadium dr hill is known across the nation for his dynamic sermons and his work with missions poor people students senior citizens and the black community he currently holds six positions as president or director of charitable or ganizations for the poor and the united benevolent society he is also vice president of the national baptist convention usa dr hill was the organi zer and builder and is the current president of two senior citizen housing pro jects in los angelse mount zion towers of the 14th annual daemen col lege president's scholar ship dinner announc ed that prominent wes tern new york arts and business leader seymour h knox 11 will receive the 14th annual presi dent's scholarship award from daemen college this event will take place on thurs april 28 at the park country club of buffalo at 4949 sheri dan drive in williams ville with cocktails at 6:30 p.m followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m and presen tation at approximately 9 p.m this daemen college black-tie event will benefit the daemen college scholarship fund sey mour h knox 11 is recognized throughout the united states as a leader of the arts he received his bachelor of arts degree from yale univer sity in 1920 and is a recipient of a doctor of fine arts degree from saint lawrence university and a doctor of
