to become a golden heritage member and will receive its plaque at the naacp annual dinner sunday june 12th at the convention center rites held funeral services for jeffrey allen taggart were held thursday mar 10th at 1 p.m from st mark's ame zion church 108 dona st in lacka wanna the rev r l williams officiated jeff taggart was born on march 8 1967 to mildred and william de von taggart sr he passed away saturday march 5 1988 jeffrey was baptized at the st mark a.m.e zion church by rev rudolph wells he attended sunday school and sang in the children's choir and the youth choir he will long be remembered for his rendition of if i got my ticket ready lord can i ride jeffrey's athletic career began at age seven with the lackawanna little loop continuing on through lackawanna jr and senior high school where he won many awards in basketball and football the highlight of his sports career was when he was named western new york player of the year in 1985 and being selected second team all state his career continued on to canisius college in buffalo where he per formed admirably for three years jeff collapsed on the bench sat march sth during a little three basketball contest with niagara university and was pronounced dead on arrival late saturday at sheehan memorial hospi tal he was carried from memorial aud after col lapsing with 10 minutes remaining in the first half of the game between the rival area schools he would have celebrated his 21st birthday on tuesday march bth taggert had started the game and played eight minutes missing four field goals attempts before he returned to the bench the erie county medi cal examiners's office re ported the autopsy showed that jett died of an enlarged heart his survivors are his parents mildred and william devon taggart sr ; a daughter jeffonia alene simmons three brothers carlton robin william jr monica and keith he is the grandson of lula and willie taggart and the late cursell wilson and the great grandson of howard w elliot of ' cambridge maryland he also leaves four aunts sylvia wilson of cambridge maryland marian banks of new castle delaware joyce pelson of salisbury maryland and martha charles connor of lack awanna other survivors are three nephews nine very close first cousins his godmother beverly rich ardson a dear friend anita agee numerous great aunts and uncles and all of his many past and present coaches team mates friends and other relatives pallbearers were barry wilson charvin wilson darryl wilson troy banks raymond ander son reginald richardson and eric taggart interment was in lake side cemetery in ham burg ny the thomas t edwards funeral home inc was in charge of the remains jeffrey allen taggart groups meet to defeat eve by abdullah luoman the committee to draft dorsey glover to run for the state assembly 141 st district presently held by the deputy speaker of the new york state assembly arthur o eve and the crusade for change committee met in martin luther king park in front of the nobel peace prize winner's statue saturday mar 12th announcing their coming together seeking a change in representation in the state assembly the time has come and the deplorable state of affairs in the 141 st state assembly district requires the citizens and voters of the district band together for the express purpose of voting for a state representative who will set a new direction for us said david e hampton spokesperson for the committee to draft dorsey glover the incumbent's politics of the 1960 of confrontation and antagonism are no longer effective and has caused the district to suffer irreparable harm a person who can and will work with all people regardless of race religion geographical and political back grounds " the concept on a crusade for change originated from discussions over a two-year period by a group of conscious community-minded indivi duals these ongoing informal discus sions by the group focused on many of the day-to-day problems encountered by inner-city residents and the blight conditions existing within our communi ty said crusade for change chairman william burroughs we concluded that our efforts and commitments have to be on a scale commensurate with a crusade if significant improvements are going to be achieved thus our purpose became political in nature and a crusade for change committee was formed the committee to draft dorsey glover and the crusade for change committee will sponsor a rally at first calvary missionary baptist church william and jefferson aye on sat march 19th at 7 p.m to further demonstrate their determination to draft dorsey glover and to defeat an incumbent who no longer serves the best interest of this district said the press release suny-buffalo students surveying opinions of city in an attempt to improve statistical knowledge of conditions within the city of buffalo some state university of new york at buffalo graduate students are surveying city resi dents about their likes and dislikes of the city the first-year graduate students in the master's of urban planning mup program at suny-buffalo are undertaking the city wide survey this month to better understand the so cial and economic situation in the city as well as resident's attitudes about buffalo housing employment shopping transportation and education are all factors affecting our daily lives when problems occur disturbing their bal ance we often look to various agencies such as buffalo neighborhood fo ci housing opportuni ties made equal the greater buffalo develop ment foundation and the greater buffalo chamber of commerce for help in order for those agencies to be effective they must be prepared to offer the kinds of assistance buffalonians need the students are at tempting to provide those agencies among the offi cial project sponsors with the latest statistical infor mation available about buffalo in the survey in an effort to obtain that information on buf falo's housing and service needs the suny-buffalo graduate students will be working in pairs knocking on the doors of approxi mately 1.500 residents to ask about 20 census-type questions such as how long the respondants have lived in the candidate to sue league of women voters for discrimination the independent candidate for president of the united states who is the first african-american woman ever to qualify for federal primary matching funds held a press conference in the johnson room of the hermitage hotel at 231 sixth avenue in nashville on thurs march 3 at 2 p.m to announced that she is taking legal action against the league of women voters for refus ing to include her in its series of nationally tele vised presidential primary debates dr fulani who de scribes her independent campaign as a crusade for fair elections went to federal district court in new yo'k city on mar 4 to argue that the league is discriminating against her both because she is a black woman and because she is an independent because of the historic role of the independent parties as a means for blacks and women to participate in electoral politics and the history of exclusion of minorities and women from the nomina ting process of the major parties explained arthur block an attorney for futani's committee for fair elections we will argue that the exclusion from the debates of a black woman candidate certified by the fec for primary matching funds is discriminatory on the basis of race and sex furthermore said block in excluding dr fulani the league was displaying a major party bias that violates its legal obligation to function in a strictly non-partisan manner the league's voter ed ucation fund which offi cially sponsors the de dr lenora b fulani annual youth day speaker jr a native buffalonian and a member of rev william callahan residents in sewer arrears could lose homes the buffalo sewer authority is notifying approximately 400 buffalo homeowners representing the final portion of an authority sewer arrears collection program that netted the city nearly 3.5 million last year that their homes will be sold at auction if they do not make arrangements to pay the sewer rents they owe the fact that these residents have not re sponded to two letters sent to them during 1987 informing them of this has forced the authority to lake this serious step if any of these home owners need a further ex
