wny's oldest and largest afro-american weekly for over 60 years featuring paid legitmate circulation established in 1925 thursday january 7-13 1988 the buffalo criterion rochester niagara region vol 54 -- no 2 rev eugene meashan candidate for bishop post this photo shows rev pedro and rev.clara castro pastors of the st andrew ame church on sumner st . and the rev and mrs eugene meashan leaders of bethel ame church east ferry and michigan avenue and rev baker a guest of the mcashans from the pennsylvania-delaware district rev meashan is currently seeking the post of bishop in the ame church the photo was taken at the kensington place restaurant 377 kensington avenue — criterion photo judge wilbur trammell lauded the langston hughes institute recently honored the honorable judge wilbur trammell judge trammell is a board member of langston hughes and was recently elected to the seat of chief judge in the nov 87 election chiet judge trammel is the first afro-american to be elected to this post this photo shows some of the langston hughes staff and members judge trammell is shown fourth from right along with anthony delgotto mr freeman dr jenkins charles ruff and others refreshments were served following the program — criterion photo tributes slated for fallen civil rights leader 10th martin luther king jr observance to be held at sheas a special performing arts tribute to dr martin luther king jr com memorating the birth of the famous civil rights activist will be held at shea's buffalo theatre on thursday jan 14th at 8 p.m freewill offerings will be accepted for this annual event which is sponsored by the martin luther king jr celebra tion committee the evening will feature performances by the buf falo philharmonic orches tra eiji oue conductor the new beginnings choral ensemble ella robinson director war dell lewis baritone the city honors singers caro lyn morgante director the buffalo academy for the visual and performing arts dancers yvonne james-brown chore ographer the futures academy performing arts ensemble in a dramatic presentation directed by jocelyn mull-rudolph others participating are students sheenia games and lewis brown ing from riverside high school and south park prep respectively in readings from selected works related to the life of dr king and the civil rights movement the program will be hosted by buffalo performer kyle christopher coles who will also narrate aaron copland's a lincoln por trait with the buffalo philharmonic orchestra the theme for the program will be living the dream the martin king jr celebration committee was formed ten years ago by community-minded citi zens as a means to create public awareness of dr king's work and to cele brate the anniversary of his birth with special events many of which were presented in conjun tion with the buffalo philharmonic orchestra the community under the direction of chairman clifford bell became the fundraising agent design ed to erect the memorial sculpture now in place in sculpture now in place in the buffalo park bearing dr kings name dr king was born on january 15 1929 he was awarded the nobel peace prize for his inspirational leadership and efforts dedicated to non-violent methods to win integration and racial harmony health scholarships available in exchange for work in nys facilities assemblyman william b hoyt d-buffalo en courages interested stu dents who are considering the health profession to apply for scholarships of up to 5,000 per year for two years irom the new york state health service corps in turn all recipients must agree to work in a state-operated facility or participating voluntary agency for 18 months for each year a scholarship is granted the program is avail able for the professional study of registered nurs ing physical therapy occupational therapy physician's assistant speech-language path ology dental hygiene and pharmacy employment opportuni ties for work are available throughout the state this is an outstanding opportunity which is de signed to benefit the student and the state which targets existing cri tical shortages in the health care profession in just two years that the program has been operat ing over 375 scholarships have been awarded said assemblyman hoyt i congratulate julie patten and sara mann of buffalo both of whom were given scholarships last year all candidates must be a new york state resident or be attending a new york school and must meet other educational criteria which is outlined in the application booklet avail able in assemblyman hoyt's office by calling 847-3100 all applications must be submitted by february bth 1988 for considera tion all applicants are judged on a competitive academic basis along with previous work experience and a demonstrated inter est in working with an institutional population surprise birthday party -
