- no 50 bellamy testimonial committee announced the rev bennett w smith pastor of st john baptist church has an nounced the formation of a committee of distinguish ed citizens who have joined together to plan a community salute to councilmember herbert l bellamy i have asked a small group to come together to plan an event which will indicate to herb and demonstrate to the entire city of buffalo that we love and respect him for his work and for his dreams for our city herb has done so much for so many it is really fitting that we join together to say thanks rev smith is serving as general buffalo and visited the home of the editor of the buffalo criterion frank e merriweather jr and chatted with him as well as criterion columnist abdullah luqman and john hemphill the group discussed ties include self-improve ment exercises and per haps more importantly activities to benefit the community bringing the boys choir of harlem to buffalo the performance is scheduled for friday dec 18th at 8 p.m at kleinhans music hall the boys choir of harlem under the direc tion of dr walter j turnbull was incorporat ed in 1975 to provide a positive creative alterna tive to inner-city children in new york city since that time the choir has gamed international recognition as one of the butler has dedicated himself to initiating com munity programs to en hance youth development one such project involves finest boys choirs in the world with a repertoire ranging from classical music to contemporary songs gospel and spirit uals the boys choir of harlem is renowned world-wide earning superlatives like remark able highly sophisti cated superb and exceptional according to the new york times the boys choir of harlem is a testament to discipline high standards and com mitment the thought of these young people joy ously embracing the sort of challenge their music requires nothing less than a clarion call to opti mism the choir has perform ed at the white house and the opening session of the united nations general assembly it has traveled and performed extensively throughout the united states europe and japan the boys choir of harlem has also appeared on all three major television net works and on the pbs series great perform ances ellington and his music and was most recently featured on the program for the official recommemoration cere monies for the statue of liberty on july 5 1986 the choir was the subject of an emmy award-winning documen tary in 1980 from harlem to harlem the story of a choirboy since its inception the boys choir of harlem has stressed not only the teaching of music but also the preparation of its members for productive lives every chorister in the past five years has completed the 12th grade and 98 percent of the singers attend college the boys choir is both artistic and humanitarian even as the choir is performing to great critical acclaim the training which the choir provides makes a significant differ ence in the lives of greater buffalo humboldt family branch the association of pediatrics and roswell park memorial institute will benefit from the concert census report says blacks reduce educational gap the gap between the proportions of blacks and white completing high school narrowed subsan tially since 1940 according to a report by the commerce department's census bureau about 81 percent of blacks and 87 percent of whites aged 25 to 29 were high school graduates in 1985 the proportions in 1940 when the bureau began gathering such sta tistics were 12 percent for blacks and 41 percent for whites for the population aged 25 and over in 1940 the proportion of white high school graduates was 3.4 times greater than for blacks 26 percent com pared with 7 percent the ratio in 1985 was 1.3 with educational st sat dec sth the rev c d bowman pastor offici ated rev white the seventh of twelve children was born on aug 9 1914 in grenada mississippi to the late john henry sr and mary elizabeth polk white he passed away suddenly on november 28 1987 mr white settled in buffalo in the early thirties after serving in the wpa as a barber and a laborer he was united in holy matrimony to the late katherine layne he was well known in the community for his good works in the minis try visiting the sick and shut-ins as well as coun seling and befriending all those whom he came in contact with mr white was fond of saying we have all been beneficiaries of the lord's blessings and it is incum bent upon us to at first receive them and then pass them on in love rev white finally re alized his dream when he was ordained the rev john henry white he was the associate minister of open door missionary baptist church for over 15 years his survivors are a son john c mccastle a granddaughter step hanie a sister
