their knees when praying on a november sunday in 1787 a lot of people say you didn't have a church in 1787 but we had the kind of thing that makes up spiritual initiative that's what we want to really celebrate says the rev dr henderson davis historiographer of the ame church the denomination has a rich history of civil and social rights activities that include the founding of wilberforce university and several other educational institutions as well as the election of 1986 of congressman floyd flake an ame minister it's more than simply rattling dead men's bones by talking about say they will combat such social problems as drug abuse illiteracy inadequate housing and unemployment as they carry out richard aliens edict for future generations this photo shows the unveiling of a 11 at his 350 year-old summer home during a private audience with his holiness at castel gondolfo outside of rome italy just prior to the pope's 1987 trip to the united states this is not a vacation but rather an adventure nine persons with western new york roots traveled to poland and italy a few weeks ago to meet with solidarity leader lech walesa in poland and his holiness john paul 11 in italy the following essay will describe my impressions based on some very thrilling events upon arrival in warsaw poland one is welcomed by an airport perhaps one tenth the size of the buffalo airport but this airport probably services a met ropolitan area with 3-4 times the population of buffalo we were greeted by two children brought to buffalo for emergency life-saving surgery these two children emilia smolmska and natalie gruczak were the healthiest little girls ever seen this was quite a contrast as to when polish american congress national vice president richard b solecki of cheek towaga brought emilia of warsaw and natalia of lublin to dr subramanian at the children hospital of buffalo when they arrived years ago these children were almost a blue-pink color their cheeks are rosy and healthy today this sign of health was recorded on tv video tape by anchorman rich kellman and chief photographer harvey mar shall of wgrz-tv our first stop of importance was to meet with lech walesa's spiritual advisor reverend henryk jankowski of st bridget church in gdansk the city of the birthplace of solidarity father jankowski greeted us with his great love and warmth he is a jovial priest who remains dogged in his support of walesa despite potential harm to himself apparently his faith overpowers any threats towards his life we later met for a long period at the church with lech walesa i have been fortunate to meet with walesa several times this man of the streets and former unemployed electrician is still a true symbolic leader of the goals of the average pole walesa may have a few more gray hairs and extra pounds then when we first met six years ago in gdansk with dick solecki but his inner strength drive and ability to communicate are still ever present walesa has always been a moder ate perhaps the radicals of solidarity six years ago wanted many reforms to take place too soon lech walesa seems to now be testing the rhetoric of the present russian regime regarding democratic reforms if the soviets are sincere then walesa will once again lead the polish people as he did for a year and a half during the brief sunshine of poland we later visited a flea market in warsaw this is capitalism at its peak the bargaining for heirlooms and treasures would make a western new york merchant dizzy old rings pocket watches statues are mixed with sink parts spark plugs and 10 year-old time magazines it is like an eastern hills mall with 20,000 people but outdoors to say the least it's a load of fun later that evenin our group visited the catholic university of lublin poland the only place for free thought behind the iron curtain we met with dr tadeusz zasepa who supervises the student and faculty exchange program between this university and daemen college of amherst ny two beautiful medals were present ed for dr robert s marshall president ol daemen college and rich kellman anchorman for wgrz-tv dr marshall was honored for setting up the exchange program and rich kellman was thanked for the series he has buffalo teacher tapped as nys's 1988 teacher of the year new york state's 1988 teacher of the year a buffalo pre-kindergarten teacher was honored nov
