rochester aids rights bill for buffalo forum by abdullah luqman the new alliance party held a public forum at the langston hughes center 25 high st friday dealing with the topic should buffalo pass an aids right bill and a federal lesbian and gay rights bill with a panel of experts from all over the state of new york dr susan massad medical direc tor at the harlem institute of social therapy and research and stewart polk health center said 90 of children with aids are children of color and the fastest growing group on new aids victims are women of color there was generally total agree ment on reactionary responses to it — make plain that this dread disease is not just a medical crisis but is a social crisis as well like poverty crime massive mental illness and homelessness aids is not a violation of nature by gays it is a violation of the masses of our people by those who profit off of everything including the decay of society dr lenora fulani said in a black empower ment forum on aids in oakland california the willingness of the powers that be to turn human tragedy into political issue is a measure of extreme decadence that infects the institutions which rule this society but the political manipula tion of the aids crisis is unfortunately nothing new research into sickle cell anemia — a disease primarily affecting black people was long underfunded solely on the basis of racism diseases afflicting the laboring classes afflicting the poor have never been attended to until they endangered the rich the following is information from pamphlets prepared by the american red cross of nys what is aids acquired immune deficiency syndrome aids is a disease complex characterized by a collapse of the body's natural immunity against disease what causes aids they really either do not know or will not tell however an international committee of scientists recently designated the virus as human immunodeficiency virus hiv does promiscuous sexual contact increase the risk of aids promiscuous sexual contact increases the risk of coming into contact with someone who is infected with the hiv aids virus as well as other sexually transmitted dis eases including syphillis gonorrhea and herpes can a person with no symptoms transmit the aids virus through sexual contact yes any infected person may transmit the virus to another person through direct blood-to-blood or semen to-blood contact most hiv infected people have no symptoms and are not even aware they are infected what is the geographic distribution of reported aids cases aids cases have been reported from all 50 states the district of columbia puerto rico and more than 35 other countries what rights do aids patients have aids patients have the same rights as those accorded to any other ill member of our society what can you do if you are discriminated against because you have aids any person who believes that he or she has been discriminated against may file a complaint with the state division for human rights african-american press club release dr singerman named clinical director at buffalo general burton singerman m.d m.p.h has been named director of clinical and educational services and associate chief of the department of psychiatry at the buffalo general hospital dr singerman will be responsible for medical student and psychiatric resident training as well as clinical care at buffalo general's community health center an in patient and outpatient psychiatric facility i hope to strengthen the educational offerings and the relationship of the bgh psychiatry depart ment to the state univer sity of new york at buffalo school of medicine dr singerman said i am also looking forward to the expansion of inpatient and outpatient services at buffalo general while maintaining the high standards which the staff has achieved he received his medical degree from harvard medical school and a masters degree in public health from johns hop kins university where he also completed his succumbs • * funeral services for . deacon william tucker were held saturday oct 1 31 st at 11 a.m from - friendship baptist ' church 402 clinton st the rev a charles ware pastor officiated mr tucker was the son of the late jacob and alice tucker born nov 22 1918 in elmore alabama he passed away tuesday october 27 1987 mr tucker joined friendship baptist church on feb 1,1959 under the leadership of the late rev e d mcneely he was ordained to the office of deacon and also was appointed to the board of trustees he retired from trico products corp where he had been an active mem ber of the uaw union he was a member of the board of directors of nhs submitted by mrs mamie garrett and was president of the connelly avenue block club he had served in the u s army and received an honorable discharge mr tucker was never tired of doing whatever his hands found to do in the church in addition to being a deacon and trustee he was a bible student who excelled as a teacher and rose to the position of associate su perintendent of the church school he was an usher a member of the dr watts and male choruses he was active in the laymen's department and served as church treasurer many delicious meals were prepared by him in the church kitchen surviving mr tucker are his wife shirley a stepson marvin cunning ham three daughters wanda zeigler of wi tumpka ala fannie mayberry of commanding general of the new york army national guard major general lawrence p flynn has announced that the department of the army has selected a western new york based army national guard bat talion to participate in operation golden thrust 88 the largest peace time reserve component mobili zation exercise since world war 11 the first battalion 127 th armor headquar tered at the masten avenue armory in buf falo and subordinate units in niagara falls dunkirk jamestown and olean new york will participate in this exercise first u s army fort meade maryland is con ducting this mobilization from nov 6th to nov 22nd the first battalion 127 th armor is part of the 42nd rainbow infantry division new york army national guard the rainbow divi sion is the largest com ponent of the 21.300 member new york army national guard and the 36,000 state militia forces of new york the divi sion traces its lineage to world war i when it was named the rainbow by its one time commander local athlete recognized jesse doyle son of romeo r doyle and criterion columnist eva m doyle was recently named one of the super seven athletes of buf falo by channel 7 it was announced by sports com mentator rick azar jesse placed no 5 in the super seven list he was cited for his achievement in football jesse age 16 is a senior at bishop turner high school during a recent football game against desales high school jesse had three interceptions one for a touchdown and he recover ed three fumbles to spark the chargers to their first win of the season he rushed for 85 yards and had 10 tackles from his cornerback position he scored on a 46-yard interception return in the first quarter the final score was turner/carroll 21 and desales 6 jesse was also named the monsignor martin association's player of the week he was picked by bells super markets as an outstand ing player jesse is presently in a business major at turner/carroll high school and is looking forward to enter ing college in the fall general douglas mac arthur these western new york soldiers will be part of some 34.000 military and civilian support per sonnel at various head quarters mobilization sta tions and state armories which will support gol den thrust in the first army region which in cludes 13 mid-atlantic and new england states and the district of columbia the buffalo guardsmen will undergo a five-phase process designed to eval uate mobilization plans policies and procedures and administrative and logistical support systems for a large-scale call up of reserve component units the five phases are pre-alert activities alert procedures assembly and actions at home stations movements of personnel and equipment to mobili zation stations and prepar ation for overseas move ment once preparation for overseas movement is complete the batalion will conduct tank gunnery training at fort pickett virginia for the remaining portion of their two-week annual training period no units or equipment will memorial united methodist church 641 vfteivrit ttitmtitf the rev johnson son of the late rev sidney o b johnson and the late hannah barnes johnson was born on december 6 1921 in meridian miss he was a graduate of talladega college in talla dega alabama he also did graduate work at long island university howard university school of theology and the univer sity at buffalo rev johnson was in volved in buffalo politics serving as a member of the erie county board of supervisors from 1963 to 1965 he then served six consecutive terms as councilman of the masten district mr johnson retired in 1982 after working as coordinator of state and federal aid for the city of buffalo he had been an active participant in the commu nity and was a member of numerous boards and or ganizations at the time of his death mr johnson was chairman of the com munity action organiza tion and was a democratic committeeman in the masten district mr johnson an ordain ed baptist minister serv ed as associate minister of promiseland missionary baptist church he is survived by his wife of 38 years mamie b three daughters mrs june johnson stanford william of rochester patricia b of buffalo and holly b , of atlanta georgia a brother charles robert gwendo lyn two sisters mrs maggie j jones of mont gomery ala and mrs josoephinej holmes dr holmes two granddaugh ters jessica and emily stanford of rochester and other relatives and rev horace c johnson hartford elects black female mayor carrie saxon perry democrat became the first black woman mayor in the northeast by defeat ing her republican op ponent by a substantial margin ms perry 56 who has represented hartford's north end of the general assembly since 1980 faced republican phillip l steele a 43 year old attorney making his first bid for political office with most of the vote in and according to unofficial returns ms perry had 7.127 votes to steele's 4,739 steele is the son of hartford radio personality bob steele a fact which is hope to
