heading a recently award ed trio of national grants for aids-related research and sarah bihr associate director professor with suny-buffalo's school of nursing will moderate the panel presentations martinear says the sym posium is an outgrowth of the highly successful teenage sexual aware ness and aids work shop held this summer and sponsored by talent search the program is aimed at helping members of the lay public — particularly teens and young adults — to understand facts about transmission and preven tion of the disease she said a question and answer segment will allow active american red cross g d searle and company and the community health care associates of new york state re cently announced a statewide three month intensive outreach and screening effort aimed at able at local pharmacies for drugs to treat their condition in order to qualify for the program individuals must have incomes below the national poverty level — 8,000 or less for a single person or a couple and 11,000 or less for a family of three or more physicians must determine which participants can be treated with the searle drugs commonly known as calan verapamil and calan sr anyone currently receiving medicaid medicare or any other form of public assistance is not eligible new york becomes the first state to participate in the distribution of the free medication although according to kay bruno of g d searle and company similiar programs by searle were being considered by other states for more information on this program contact your local community health center in margaret strasner is president the women residing in the county of erie especially african-american wo men can be proud of the fact that we have had a county executive for the past nine years who genuinely cares about women's issues problems and needs there is a consensus among the mem bership of the buffalo womens council for action that edward j rutkowski has initiated action in his administration that places women's issues/concerns as a majority priority currently there are several women in the rutkowski administration who have major administrative responsibili ties please note the day-to-day operation of erie county government the buffalo womens council for action would like to point out a very noteworthy effort by the rutkowski administration concerning women in september 1985 county executive rutkowski appointed erie county's task force on the status of women the authorization legislation created a task force consisting of fifteen appointed members of the public and four liaisons from the erie county departments of health senior services social services and the equal employment opportunity office the purpose of this body was to study the unique needs of women in erie county a task force report was received by mr rutkowski on march 31 1987 and he immediately acted upon the recommendations outlined in said report mr rutkowski's most note worthy action was the creation of a commission on women in erie county government to develop and implement services that will eradicate the economic and social inequities of women in erie county in view of the act that ed rutkowski is an action-oriented individ ual we the members of the buffalo womens council lot action highly endorse the honorable edward j rutkowski for re-electior to the office of erie county million-member pen tecostal denomination adds approximately 45 million to the memphis economy according to ms sarah sing housing bur eau manager of the mem phis convention and visi tors bureau ms sing said that almost 16 million is directly infused into the memphis economy as a result of the convention a breakdown showed that the church of god in christ conventioneers spend 65 percent of that amount for food and lodging in area hotels and 35 percent in local retail stores transportation and area attractions according to the united travel data center she said for every 44,000 spent for leisure or con vention travel a perman ent job is created in the economy therefore the total indirect benefit could be trippled resulting in as much as 45 million added to the memphis economy for the under-repre sented among those who are effectively using the competitive entrepreneurial process to achieve social and economic power this process is creating a whole array of new options and choices by which african-americans can achieve economic power tate and local govern ments are now using public funds to create the basic infrastructures needed to grow and nurture the next generation of small business firms industries and markets said tate it is crucial that black americans be included in this activity during the early start-up phases the foundation will initiate the project in 30 metropolitan areas throughout the united states among the jobs that tate said that blacks must be in on their creation are literacy schools teaching and increasing peoples ability to read and write up to the point that they are employable health care services and supplies and cable tv for the education of children and other specialized studies western new york foundation representative george
