county executive edward j rutkowski thursday announced that he has received permission from the federal government to expand the popular foreign trade zone ftz in lackawan na approval of our request to quadruple existing space at the site will enable the facility to better serve current business es and help attract more rutkowski said to the group of officials gathered for the early morning announcement at the site ftz no 23 is virtually bursting at the seams he said it's unable to accommodate additional users and in fact has been forced to turn away interested employers because of the lack of space he explained that the amount of lobs created is dependent on the number size and storage needs of the companies that eventually move to the zone plans call for adding 125,000 square feet near the existing building the zone currently provides warehouse facilities for 28 businesses using 36.000 square feet the ftz is located in the gateway trade center complex on the grounds of the former bethlehem steel plant in the cities of buffalo and lackawanna companies which operate out of an ftz are exempt from costly import duties until their final product is assembled and distributed this offers substantial cash-flow advantages and makes firms more competitive in inter national markets rutkowski noted that an increasing demand tor space at the site is a tribute to my baby daughter
