youth employment is goal 200 students to participate in minority youth internship program the minority business council's summer youth internship program has an announced goal to place 200 minority students in jobs at area businesses this summer through the cooperation of local indus try niagara frontier services sett aviation and west wood pharmaceuticals this program is an excellent opportunity to provide career guidance and direction for our young people kenzie said if we are to continue to grow as a region we need to main tain an aggressive and talented work force the announcement was made by mayor james d griffin ross b kenzie chamber chairman and eric swider chamber president at an afternoon press conference in the mayor's office the minority youth summer internship pro gram is designed to give an eight-week 160 hour work experience at a local business during july and august for selected high school seniors according to kenzie the program will allow for necessary interaction be tween the business and educational communities that will produce business executives in the near future local businesses are urged to provide 20 hours per week of meaningful work during the summer and provide a 600 stipend for the student if within the scope of the program individuals will learn how buiinm-.i conducted and about career opportunities exist ing be a beautiful day outside the church but inside as well mr ferguson was taken by surprise when the ladies group and the parish community honored him recently with an award of recognition and luncheon for his 18 years of service as the church organist . including the last few years as choir director in accepting the award mr ferguson a life-long member of the church said this honor had served as st john's history remembered as it looks toward 60th year st john baptist church 188 goodell st will celebrate its 60th anniver sary on sunday may 3rd the dr j alfred smith st pastor of allen tem ple baptist church of oakland california and president of the progres sive national baptist con ference will be the speak er at the morning service history of st john baptist church st john baptist church was founded in 1927 under the leadership of the late rev burnie c mc carley and four faithful members mrs mabel mccarley the late mrs alice mccarley and the late joseph and dora kelley from a little store front on william st the church moved to 481 clinton st then to 616 clinton st and in 1930 it moved to 92 monroe st this building is still standing today and is affectionately known as little st john through faith prayer and god's grace st john continued onward and upward its first two converts were two men the late william price and the late willie green after these two others came and united finally there were enough for a small senior choir it was really just a small group of people singing together and when they had enough members the first presi dent was elected — the late richard brown the first deacons of st john were walter price and nathan crockett the sunday school was organized with willie mc cullen as superintendent other groups began such as the missionary society with mrs ella mac little as president the senior usher board with mrs willie bell green smith as president and the pastor's aid with mrs wright as president throughout the years the members worked hard and faithfully in 1945 a rally was conducted and with a membership of only 400 in 90 days 5,000 was raised on october 5,1945 the building at 183 sycamore st was purchased for 21,000.00 and the mort gage was paid off years ahead on july 7 1947 under pastor mccarley several ministers were ordained and new church rutkowski requests investigation of current consumer issues saying the primary re sponsibility of government is to protect the freedoms and rights of our consum era erie county execu tive edward j rutkowski tuesday requested the county's consumer pro tection committee to in vestigate a number of issues of major concern to local consumers rutkowski issued his directives during the citi zen advisory panel's monthly meeting in the county office building rutkowski said that information and know ledge of consumer rights are the integral ingredi ents necessary for con sumers to make intelligent decisions it is our respon sibility to ensure that consumers are not only protected but educated about their rights with this in mind he added i am asking that you review report and respond to several areas of concern brought to my attention by our citizens unsolicited credit cards are being sent to consumers and sometimes fall into the wrong hands — leaving the consumer with a bill of which he has no knowledge i also am concerned about credit repair and counseling clinics — some do little more than advise the consumer of their right to obtain a disclosure of the consumer's credit file at a credit bureau explained rutkowski another problem area i am concerned about is deceptive advertising work-at-home schemes rev henry ford sr.dies funeral services for the late rev henry ford sr were held tuesday april 28 at 3 p.m from the cedar grove baptist church 878 humboldt parkway the rev t l ransom pastor offici ated the rev glenn h dußois gave the eulogy rev ford was born to the late david ford and annie nora clemons ford on sept 12 1925 he passed away on tuesday april 21 1987 he accepted christ at an early age and united with the old mt olive baptist church in arkansas un der the leadership of rev ben gilbert at the age of 14 he was superintendent of the sunday school a prominent bass singer in the choir a featured tenor soloist for the glory bound quartet he served several years as a sunday school teacher church clerk and as a deacon rev henry
