rochester youth for self-help program founded by jesse f key general manager of wufo radio station and imamabdelj nuriddin resident imam masjid man the need as ethnic groups in america to assume the responsibility of employment and economic development for their own people is becoming more apparent everyday no long will the ethnic mind of america continue to assume the total weight of other ethnic people outside of its group to provide employment and business development as was done in the past today we are watching asians and other foreigners come into the united states of america and in a short period of time they have the visability of potential relative independence this development by other ethnic groups from outside the borders of the united states has come about because as a group they see the massive opportuni ties in america within its free enterprise system and they take advantage of it cubans in florida own banks koreans in new york own most of your street fruit stands and they also own other business interests these economic developments are the product of hard work and unity among those people it is obvious these people didn't come to america with being recipients of the welfare system of america all of their lives nor did they come here with the primary thought in mind of working for someone else perpetually progress of other ethnic groups should signal to the african-american that this is not a bad time in america for t,*wvv.r'.'?n«i am c_c rv m their material resources when the african-american begins to utilize the billions of dollars of his cash flow for his upliftment from economic dependency then his community and plight will ch*"<k n no belor voutn mploymw.l w*_l_~m '_-_-„ c££"?-_r *_°", ci o*^^s«*sr with the knowledge that other ethnic groups are concerned with their youth first where does that leave the african-american youth if african americans won't produce employment for themselves time has long arrived for the collective mind of the african-american to galvanize itself for the purpose of group elevation economic plans and employment strategies are of more importance today than political develop ment without any solutions the quesiton today is is the african-american ready to assume the responsibility for his own social and economic growth if he is not ready for that responsibility then his plight is going to worsen as we reach the close of project's goal is employment through self-help initiatives the 20th century economists such as john nesbitts author of best seller mega trends is forecasting no dramatic change in the american economy before the beginning of the 21st century the evident fact for african-americans is that they must begin to do more for themselves that when they have done in the past recently jesse f key general manarer of radio station wufo 1080 am and imam abdel jaleel nun host of he weekly broadcast entitled face up which is aired every saturday morning at 10:30 a m support of a resolution which calls upon congress 4p enact strong and effec tive legislation designed to balance u s trade accounts with major trad ing partners the trade deficit of the united states has risen to the enormous and fright ening cumulative total of 629 billion since 1980 and the number of indus trial jobs in this country that have been lost as a direct result of the mount ing trade deficit is approaching three mil lion affirmed robinson all sectors of our national economy from high-tech growth indus tries to the public sector to service industries are ad versely affected our basic manufacturing in dustry is also badly hurt by unbalanced foreign trade the uncontrolled trade deficits area major contri butor to the status of the u s as the world's leading debtor nation the nation's global debt now exceeds 220 billion which is more than double the debt owed by tradi remedied the deficits we are running in trade with those countries this resolution urges congress to enact strong legislation to balance these trade accounts and asks that the legislation in clude goals and timetables for . reducing the huge trade surpluses that our major trading partners have run at this nation's • expense i am hopeful that any such legislation would also include specific mandated sanctions to be applied to those trading partners who fail to open their markets to u s products in order to bring their trade ac counts with this country into reasonable balance relatively soon robinson concluded tionally debtor nation bra zil bilateral negotiations with our major trading partners have failed to open their markets to u s goods or to significantly reduce our trade deficit stated robinson the ongoing and dra matic decline of the value of the dollar in relation to certain foreign corporation counsel to initiate article 78 of the civil practice law and rules which provides the provisions to enact proceedings against a body or officer when the body or officer fails to perform a duty enjoined upon it by law against the mayor james griffin in june of 1986 an ordinance amendment was approved over the mayor's veto — an ordinance months ago the mayor has deliberately refus ed to implement this amendment inspite of numerous calls and letters ' said bell there is no question in my mind that the mayor has no concern about the welfare of the citizens who work and visit city-owned offices and buildings his the mayor's failure to implement the smoking ordinance is proof positive of his obstinance and complete disregard for the law said the councilman-at-large the fact of action in this matter of law does more than wreck havoc on our system of government it directly impacts on the health and personal lives of our citizenry the mayor as defined by the charter is responsible to enforce the law he cannot ignore legislation because he does not agree with it accordingly i have filed a resolution calling for the initiation of an article 78 proceeding against the mayor which will cause him to perform his duties as prescribed by the law said bell whereas an ordinance amend ment adding a new article xvii to chapter vi regulating smoking in city offices and buildings was passed by this common council on june 10 1986 and whereas following a subse quent veto by the mayor the legislation was repassed on june 24 1986 and wherea xvii states th the adoptior employer if agencies .
