race by city of tonawanda democrats assemblyman robin schimminger was endors ed by a unanimous vote last night for the office of erie county executive by the city of tonawanda democratic committee the motion supporting schimminger and urging him to seek the democra tic nomination for county executive was made by tonawanda mayor david miller city of tonawanda democratic chairman who called schimminger the democrats most electable candidate among the field of execu tive hopefuls beginning with his upset victory for a seat on the erie county legisla ture robin has won every one of his elections he has consistently shown bi partisan appeal racking up 71 percent of the vote last year in a district where democrats make up only 41 percent of the elector ate said miller tonawanda city council president timothy mur ray seconding the motion stated that robin has th vision ability resources and wherewithal to win this election and lead erie county into the 19905 his leadership in albany in the fight to cut taxes and improve the economic and job climate is what's ni-i-iiii here in county hall schimminger has repre sented the 140 th district in the state assembly for ten years prior to that he was elected to two terms in the erie county legisla ture the state lawmaker currently chairs the as sembly committee on small business and has chaired the joint legisla tive commision on econo my and efficiency in government schimmin ger and his wife the former melinda downey reside in kenmore services set for mrs h.b shaw memorial services for mrs h b shaw will be held friday feb 6th 7 p.m at the gethsemane missionary baptist church mrs shaw 95 is the widow of the founder of the church and was a prominent figure in na tional baptist organiza tions mrs shaw died monday feb 2 1987 in buffalo general hospital she will be buried in forest lawn cemetery next to her late husband the rev henry b shaw funeral services will be held saturday feb 7th at gethsemane baptist church at 11 a.m mrs shaw was the former floree simpkins she was born in 1892 in calhoun falls south carolina she attended the brewer normal board ing school for girls in greenwood s c and began her work with local baptist churches that would continue throughout her life mrs shaw life as a rr nister's wife began in 1 iz.abeth new jersey where her late husband rev shaw accepted his pastorate to the liberty baptist church these brief years established the ground work for the submitted by mrs mamie garrett responsibility for her many activities in the church shi was president of the baptist ministers wives and widows of new york state for 40 years she was treasurer of the women's auxiliary of the western baptist district association superinten dent of the church sunday school at gethsemane was a life member of the national baptist conven tion u.s.a life member of the interdenominational ministers wives confer ence u.s.a a life mem ber of the women's auxiliary empire baptist missionary convention new york member of buffalo civil rights league inc board mem ber of the multiple sclero sis society and was a member of the board of directors of the nutrition and beverage inc while attending many national baptist conven tions mrs shaw cared for the late dr martin luther king jr who was then a child while his mother alberta williams king play the church organ in 1975 mrs shaw attended the 13th annual baptist world congress in stockholm where she represented the women's department of the baptist i world alliance she also traveled to england and israel as a church organization repre sentative mrs shaw was also a member of the southern christian leadership as sociation she received many awards and certificates of recognition from local government for her years of service to the church and the community she was the first woman designated to give the invocation before a meet ing of the buffalo common council and in may 1965 the council honored her with a resolution proclaim in mrs h b shaw day in the city in 1984 mrs shaw received the alpha kappa alpha sorority's martin luther king religious award the h b shaw christian service award from gethsemane baptist church and the push e for excellence field of religion award she was honored by the baptist ministers confer ence of buffalo and vicini ty in 1972 and in 1975 " more than 150 friends attended a dinner in her honor at the former statler hilton mrs h b shaw urban league sunday to be observed feb 8th we can make a world of difference is this year's theme forty affiliates of the national urban league local churches and other community institutions will participate in the national observance of urban league sunday on feb bth with the theme we can make a world of difference the annual event takes place on the second sunday in february and is a day in which the urban league movement and the j religious community can join in special programs and other activities de signed to reinforce the ■traditional bonds existing i between them in addition it allows both to reaffirm their commitment to greater cooperation in their mu tual pursuit of strategies to improve the quality of life within black america through this year's theme the national obser vance will focus on ways of enhancing the institu tional strengths of the black community to re spond more effectively to the problems of black joblessness teenage preg nancy inadequate educa tion and drug abuse among others this emphasis on self help and community mobilization on urban legue sunday is especial ly important in the face of federal budget cuts and fewer resources on this special day we hope that black citizens will be joined by their fellow americans in pledging their involvement in volun tary , community-based colorado thurgood marshall scholarship fund started a merit scholarship pro gram named in honor of u s supreme court justice thurgood mar shall has been established for students attending the nation's historically black public colleges and univer sities the creation of the thurgood marshall black education fund was an nounced by officials from the office for advance ment of public black colleges oapbc inaugural support is being provided by miller lite beer through a grant of 50,000 and in-kind pro motional advertising ex ceeding si million in value the united negro col lege fund has long provid ed support for private in nl i v loirs but heretofore . a similar fund has not ex isted for public colleges and universities oapbc institutions with 130.000 students enroll nearly 25 percent of all u s black students in higher education marshall attended lin coln university in pennsyl vania a member of the oapbc as the marshall fund's founding corporate spon sor miller lite in cooper ation with the national basketball assoc will elicit public support through an extensive pro moitonal campaign econ passing print radio and television advertising special 30-second tele vision commercials fea turing former professional basketball star bob lanier will air on the nba game of the week on cbs during february black history month other pro motional advertising will begin in february and continue through the re mainder of the year it is significant that funds from the new scholarship program will not be used for athletic scholarships today many minority teenagers feel that the only way to make it is through athletic endeavors hope fully the marshall fund will help encourage the pursuit of scholastic and other long-term career opportunities said kevin tripp miller lite assistant brand manager according to oapbc director joyce payne the fund fills a critical gap in the black higher education community this effort moves fund raising beyond individual campuses and communi ties and provides a mechanism for tapping the resources of private cor porations alumni organi zations and other groups the marshall fund will be administered by a 15-member advisory com mittee scholarship sup port will be made directly to member institutions and awarded to students who meet qualifications es tablished by the commit tee these students will be known as thurgood marshall scholars miller brewing com pany has maintained an educational partnership former pro-basketball star bob lanier left makes a shot with a 50,000 check from miller lite to launch the thurgood marshall black education fund - the first merit scholarship program for students attending the nation's 35 historically black public colleges and universities wailing for the rebound at the new york announcement of the fund are nba official adrian d.l.mm and joyce payne director of the office for the advancement of public black colleges with selected historically black colleges and univer sities for more than a decade and has initiated a number of programs de signed to help prepare students to compete in the private sector the washington d c based oapbc is an office of the national association of state universities and land-grant colleges in cooperation with the asso ciation of state colleges and universities nowak elected to serve on science committee representative henry j nowak id-buffalo has been elected a member of the house committee on science space and tech nology the committee has jurisdiction over the nasa space programs environmental and energy research international technology . competitive ness and federal funding of scientific research con ducted on university cam puses congressman nowak will serve on the sudcom mittee on science re search and technology and the subcommittee on natural resources agri culture research and en vironment the subcom mittee of science re search and technology is responsible for the budget of the national science foundation the subcommittee on natural resources agri culture research and en vironment is responsible for a variety of research programs at the environ mental protection agency department of energy and the national oceanic and atmospheric admin istraiton research nowak who in the 100 th congress will also serve as chairman of the subcom mittee on water re sources of the committee on public works and transportation said i think that my new activi ties on the science and technology committee will dovetail with my responsibilities as chair man of the water re sources subcommittee a tribute in song by mrs eva m.doyle two buffalo teachers recently combined their creative talents and wrote a song in tribute to dr martin luther king jr the song is entitled a man who believed the authors are mrs catherine d'erasmo a language arts teacher and oren hollasch an instructor of music both teachers are on the staff at the college learning laboratory/campus west mrs d'rasmo wrote the words and mr hollasch composed the music to create a very inspiring salute to a great american recently their song was performed at the college learning lab during a program in honor of dr martin luther king jr the upper school chorus gave the audience a special treat in singing it both mr hollasch and mrs d'erasmo have worked very hard to nam ill a musical tribute to mm ti am grtrmued leaders there song will be performed on march 29th in a choir exchange program between the woodside united methodist church located on abbott road the pastor is the rev craig french v the other church involved in this exchange program is the metropoli tan united methodist church located at 657 best st mr hollasch is very enthusiastic and brings a fresh creative touch to his music mrs d'erasmo is equally as enthusiastic and provides the right poetic
