niagara region thursday january 1-7 1987 the buffalo criterion vol 62 - no 1 wny's necessary minority newspaper - featuring paid legitimate circulation rochester nbc to telecast 19th annual image awards happy new year battle of life speech presented the rev calvin l sherrell returned to buffalo and made a surprise visit to the memphis call meeting of 02 jurisdictional business meeting under the direction of bishop c h mccoy the rev sherrell was granted permission to present the state bishop of the 2nd jurisdiction and state supervisor mother isabelle atchinson with a copy of the famous battle of life speech by the 26th president theodore roosevelt ms rosie henry the state president of the sunshine band assisted rev sherrell in the ceremony the rev sherrell later said that he felt very uplifted to see all those pastors church officials and members who came from all over the western new york region to give way for him for the brief ceremony and if this isn't love and fellowship then yon tell me what is he said the rev sherrell said that the roosevelt speech was given to hun handwritten by a son of a successful baptist pastor of eastern new york as a sign of encouragement to an arena fighter the brief speech is directed to the ones who are in the battle of life arena giving of his sweat blood and tears for a cause and if that arena fighter goes down in defeat president roosevelt says if he fails at least he fails while daring greatly so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who have tasted neither victory nor defeat on other matters the rev sherrell said even though i am in a binding commitment to the church of god in christ in the midwest while home i plan to use my building trade knowledge as a volunteer to help the pastors of jurisdiction 02 in their effort in completing phase ii of the mccoy convention center more information on rev sherrell's upcoming book will be announced later the rev sherrell is available for atchinson spight anderson and gooden .— criterion photos goldome gallery to exhibit rogovin's working people series milton rogovin a buf falo-based photographer who has gained interna tional prominence for his documentary photog raphy will have an exhibit of his work at the goldome gallery jan 6th through feb 20th the goldome gallery which opened last month will exhibit rogovin s working people series shot between 1977 and 1980 the series depicts the quiet dignity of indus trial workers while they toil on the job and relax with their families at home mr rogovin's work is represented in major museums and public col lections in this country and abroad including the al bright-knox art gallery the metropolitan museum of art the museum of modern art the library of congress bibliotheque national paris and foto grafiska museet stock-1 holm he also has had major one-person exhibits in this country and in finland sweden norway amsterdam scotland and china born in 1909 in new york city mr rogovin came to buffalo in 1938 to practice optometry he began his intensive proj ects in documentary photography in 1958 which he continues today with the collaboration of his wife anne the goldome gallery which is free and open to the public is located under the gold dome at one fountain plaza in downtown buffalo the gallery is open during regular banking hours from 8:45 a.m to 3:30 p.m monday through wednesday and from 8:45 a.m through 4:30 p.m thursday and friday collins named manager of ambulatory care at ecmc mrs catherine collins has been named manager of ambulatory care at the erie county medical cen ter 462 grider st she comes from the health systems agency of western new york where she worked for ten years most recently as director of quality assur ance before that she was a primary care planner and coordinator at the comprehensive health planning council of wes tern new york for four years a component mana ger for health at the city of buffalo model cities for three years an obstetrical nurse at sisters hospital of buffalo for six years and coordinator of health ser vices at buffalo public school no 48 for two years she holds a degree in nursing from trocaire college a bachelor's de gree in vocational practi cal nursing from the state university college at buf falo completed the pedi atric nurse practitioner program at the state university of new york at buffalo where she also earned the master's de gree in allied health and is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in organ izational administration she i the current president of the practical and registered nurses association of western new york a trustee of mount st joseph's acad emy and serves on the project review committee of the health systems agency of western new york among her numerous honors is a special citation from governor mario cuomo for outstanding contributions to the attica family prison health edu cation programs city and county proclamations for urban health committee leadership and the 1986 distinguished alumni award from trocaire col lege she and her husband clyde and two children laura and clyde live in buffalo mrs catherine collins unity makes offer for manhattan life insurance company shares unity mutual life insur ance company of syra cuse ny has made an offer to purchase from manhattan national corp mnc all the outstanding guarantee capital shares of the manhattan life insur ance company mlic john f x mannion unity chairman and ceo an nounced mlic is head " quartered in new york city unity's written offer of 24,800,000 was delivered to the board of directors of mnc a new york stock exchange listed company which currently owns all of m llc's guarantee capital shares following the purchase of the mlic shares unity intends to have mlic periodically retire the shares after the retire ment unity intends to merge with mlic creat ing a new york state domestic mutual life insur ance company unity's financing for the purchase is through a major new york city banking institution unity made insurance industry history with two prior mergers the first with new jersey-based guarantee mutual life in surance company in 1983 90 minute star-studded special to air jan 17th the nbc television net work will air the 19th annual naacp image awards on sat jan 17th in a 90-minute star-studd ed special this broadcast debut marks an historic first for these awards given by the naacp this country's oldest and most respected civil rights organization as never before in its i9lh year history has it been on national network tele vision the show which was held on dec 14th in los angeles will air in the time slot regularly reserv ed for nbc's saturday night live which runs 11:30 p.m both on the east coast and the west coast while many of the image awards categories somewhat duplicate other traditional awards such as the oscar emmy gram my and tony the image award takes on a very special significance to those nominees and win ners because it honors positive depictions of blacks black images on the movie screens and tele vision sets were at one time in the view of the naacp lacking a realism and an accuracy which failed to offer the general community a true picture of the black experience this coupled with the need former buffalonian heads hartford children's pantry carl mcclellan a form er buffalonian an married to the former marion barber also of buffalo administers the children's pantry at hor ace bushnell church in hartford connecticut he has taken on this special task with a strong commit ment to lay ministry in 1978 he graduated from the lay ministry course at hartford seminary with certification at that time his lay ministry has founi many expressions this includes preaching in area churches recently avon simsbury and bloomfield an especially meaningful experience was a plowshares trip to africa with bob evans he has also been modera tor of the farmington valley association carl brings to his administration of the food pantry an excellent back ground before retiring he was employed by the veterans administration in the dental technology field but he also handled union management rela tions for the v.a it is a demanding task that he has undertaken sometimes he explains he needs a thick skin for some who ask for food bre angry about their situa tion so carl must run the children's pantry fairly firmly and compassion ately . he knows he must be sensitive to both the needs and feelings of those he serves it entails faithful oversight three times a week and promotion of the pantry with area churches as well mari an his wife says that carl frequently comes home ex hausted a strong support group for his ministry is a men's bible class at the first church of christ in unionville this group has been meeting regularly at 7:30 a.m every sun ay morning for 10-12 years even though tie mcclellans moved to west hartford from forestville some time ago and joined horace bushnell church carl values this particular bible study group and relates his ministry to his biblical faith he states the connection very directly i am a christian and we have to do what we can to help people who
