continuation of job creating udag program u s senator alfon so m d'amato r-c ny has successfully convinced the senate appropriations commit tee to stop an effort to kill all funding for a federal program that has leveraged almost 2 billion in private investment and created over 42.000 jobs in new york since 1981 - d'amato thwarted an effort to end funding for the urban develop ment action grant program since its inception in 1974 the urogram has successful ly helped communities fight unemployment by leveraging private in vestment in local efforts that will result in new job opportuni ties the udag program creates private sector »<*>• tor people in areas that need eco nomic development the program pays for itself as the tax base is broadened and the drain on social service programs is lessened d'amato said the appropriations committee adopted a d'amato amendment to provide 225 million in urban development action grants next year this reversed an attempt by the office of management and budget to end all funding for the pro gram the money is now included in what will be the senate's ver sion of the fy'b7 hud-independent agen cies appropriations bill the house version of that bill has 275 mil lion for the udag program a funding level that senator d amato hopes wilt be achieved when the fin .*» b«u is agreed to in a house-senate confer ence committee later this year
