governor's choice for lieutenant by abdullah luqman community leaders and concerned individuals met with gov cuomo's choice for lieutenant governor congressman stanley lundine in a face-to-face discussion with each expressing their concerns and ideas about improving the afro-american community friday aug bth at the kensington place 377 kensington aye what can be done and how can you assure the black community that we will get our fair share of the jobs available asked warren galloway lundine said i don't want to see minorities shut out of any job opportunities anywhere in the state i have a record to prove that the first time that i took office as the mayor of jamestown i made it a high priority to establish affirmative action little jamestown community college had the first affirmative action program of any part of the state university system if the city of buffalo comes to the state for a lot of assistance in political business i don't see anything wrong with having buffalo trying to meet our state wide goals of affirmative action to get that help lundine said when someone pointed out that bullalo came out as the worse place in america for blacks to live in a recent survey and black unemployment is roughly 25 lundine said i was shocked but not surprised to learn that a national survey conducted by a research firm in washington d c found that the best place for upward mobility for blacks was in nassau county long island and the worse place for upward mobility and opportunity in america was in buffalo each in the state of new york i believe that buffalo has bottomed out and will start moving ahead in the near future there are very few shoes left to drop but in this community it is painfully slow business and economic develop ment are the first order of social progress we cannot achieve the other objectives that we have for improving our quality of life unless we have a growing economy and that economy must be growing for all parts of our state since governor cuomo has been in office over 9,000,000 jobs have been created in new york in 1985 one out of every five new jobs created in america were right here in the empire state gov cuomo and i agree that there are pockets in new york that are not sharing in that prosperity there are places in new york that need special attention and there are business communities throughout this state that need a feeling of partnership that we have to use to revitalize the economics of some areas i am a firm believer in minority business investment and incentives we need to reach out and get more minorities involved in business develop ment i would like to come back to the state of new york and be the governor's partner in trying to assure that every area of this great state achieves the resurgence that some parts of the state ' is already enjoying particularity here in western new york we need new jobs we need quality jobs and we need economic and business development i am enthusiastic at this process and the prospect of working with you in the greater buffalo area to try to achieve new prosperity new progress and new hope i know of no goal that i will have that will be any higher than bringing quality jobs to all of the people of new york lundine said in response to an fighter fighters to hold biennial the mocha society men of color helping all of buffalo inc and host pastor rev a charles ware rev melvin charles smith eye on history issues and answers the issues convention that was held last week at st augustine's center unfortunately was just another repetitive conference that restated the problems that we face with the youth in our community i wish that someone in this community would plan a seminar that deals with solutions to our problems rather than repeating the same old thing over and over again it would be better to spend three hours brainstorming ideas for solutions rather than spending three hours listening to the same folks reheating the same old soup we have identified the problems over and over again where i repeat is where are the concrete solutions i don't want promises from politicians i don't want glowing speeches from men decked out in three piece suits with ties chocking their throats i don't want flowery words and theories about what is wrong as a parent with teenagers who need jobs and decent recreational facilities i want answers this columnist was disturbed about this issues convention because so many people did not know about it the ones who needed the information were not there if we are going to hold these meetings that are designed to help the entire community then why are half the people blocked out our people are dying from a lack of knowledge knowledge it seems is a privilege of a very few people i have said over and over again in this column that those among us who have the knowledge should share it with others unfortunately this does not happen as often as it should lawyers doctors nurses teachers businessmen and others should devote a couple of hours a week to share information this can be done in a variety of ways which include the following 1 writing a weekly column in our community papers and doing it on a regular basis not once or twice and then getting tired and quitting we need your knowledge 2 by participating on community radio and tv programs call the producers of these programs and by eva m doyle volunteer your time 3 create a weekly newsletter and distribute it throughout the community this columnist a few years ago created a newsletter entitled the childrens page which included lessons on math reading black history etc 4 offer your services as a speaker to church groups and community groups 5 develop flyers and distribute information in this way there are dozens of ways to generate more information the above suggestion is just one of the things that need to be considered i don't think i can stand to attend another conference seminar meeting or anything that does not offer what we really need it is very hard to move black folks to do things the spirit of volunteerism should be rampant in our community i was encouraged by the beautiful article that appeared in the buffalo news monday aug 11th about missionary annie l moore it was written by carl allen missionary moore has volunteered her time for 28 years in providing a bible class in her home she has set a fine example missionary moore often writes words of wisdom for our community papers she is a beautiful person and we need more like her it is not easy to do these things it takes a great sacrifice patience and caring and it takes self-discipline every time i write an article i must practice self-discipline in the end it is all worth while because i meet many people who tell me they have learned something new instead of holding a meeting in our local community buildings perhaps we need to hold the next meeting in the middle of a run down playground and then ask our youth who are trying to play basketball on a lot full of broken glass and wine bottles what they feel needs to be done to help solve the problems they face exploring issues without a definite structured course of action is not the way to solve anything walker supports renovation of ellicott mall charles walker the endorsed republican and conservative candidate for the 33rd congressional district states that the buffalo ellicott mall should remain entact and renovated walker ex plained that the cost to destroy these buildings to the taxpayers would be great when you look at the outer structure you will see that they are sound to reproduce these same buildings today would be very costly the taxpayers across metropolitan buffalo years ago invested a large sum of their money to secure low income housing for the people these buildings could be restor ed to become a show piece in our area walker said that these dwellings lie in the 33rd congressional district which he has committed himself to represent the people within this area walker also said it does not make sense to tear down sound struc tures for special interest to create a much more costly venture that would benefit a few mr walker is appealing media — see page 3 walker — see page 8 governor's choice — see page 7
