announced that erie county's central police services will be the first operating site for lifenet new tool in the effort to find and help missing and exploited children rep kemp said we are very fortunate to be the first operating site for this application of new technologies which will allow our law enforcement authorities to deal more effectively with the prob lem of missing and exploited children lifenet is a pri vate sector initiative by msi sperry corporation chorus data systems and analytics the various companies have developed a computer based system whereby a picture of a missing child and relevant information can be entered into a database and sent to the national center for missing and exploited children which then trnasmits the information to the rest of the country this process currently takes as long as eight days but with lifenet in full operation the process can be completed in under eight minutes kemp added this is an excellent example of how the private sector can contribute their expertise time and money to the development of solutions to problems that affect our communities i recently co-spon sored legislation hr-604 that would authorize the office of juvenile justice to make grants to the states for the purpose of establishing or operating clearinghouses for infor mation on missing chil dren i know that the steps that are being taken by both the private and public sector will help fight the tragic problem of missing and exploited children farrakhan ends world tour — welcome slated in chicago black community to welcome home minister farrakhan rudolph l wells is pastor collins says no to closing of deaconess emergency center by abdullah luoman at a public meeting called by the citizens for quality public health care cqphc and the masten neighbor hood council mnc along with coun cilman david collins masten cliff bell bell councilman-at-large and james pitts euicott at the community ac tion organization cao center 735 humboldt parkway at 7 p.m to discuss with representatives of buffalo general hospital mgh the closing of the immediate treatment center itc at deaconess hospital the informed public made the hospital spokespersons change many of their facts among the challenged written and or oral statements made by bgh's • executive vice-president john fried lander and public relations person john hill were all services available at the itc at the deaconess will remain the same with the hours changed from 9 a.m to 9:30 p.m every day including holidays to 8:30 a.m to 5 p.m week days excluding holidays the hospital is losing 55 on every patient treated at the center residents would be better served by the merger because more doctors would be available and primary services would be expand ed none of the present workers would lose their jobs and that the primary reason for the merger is that the family practice center fpc and the itc are not being used to their capacity friedlander made clarifications to include bgh in maintaining all of the services rendered at itc after the mer ger following councilman collin's state ment it is not possible to give proper medical care to more people with less staff working fewer days and shorter hours they bgh have chosen to re duce the medical services and that is reneging on commitments that they made two years ago under questioning from council man pitts friedlander changed the patient capacity of the combined fpc and itc from 15,000 to 21,000 when pitts made him concede that they had at least 19,000 visits to the facilities last year this negated the statement that the reason for the merger is because the itc and fpc are not being used to their capacity at the present time sally bell represents the executive board of nurses united twa local 1168 clerical and technical workers of the staff at bgh and its deaconess divi sion said that all of the workers have been offered jobs elsewhere in the system including some with more than 20 years seniority i feel that what the hospital is proposing will not take care of the people in this area she said otis glover president of cqphc a group that was formed in 1978 to stop bgh from buying the new erie county medical center because it was a new facility and they felt the bgh should not be allowed by the county and state to take care of the poor's health care needs gave the following conclusion from cqphc research the medical services rendered by the itc will no longer be available at deaconess hospital after the first week in july there will be no service on week ends or holidays appointments will be required there will be a two-week wait for new patients lacerations and trauma cannot be serviced employees say basically because they will not have the facilities to service them walk-ins will be seen by a doctor only between 8:30 and 1:30 a.m and they have had staff cuts with no plans to increase staff at the present in essence they are not taking away the money but they are taking the services which monies have been provided to render to briefly summarize they are reducing the services making it harder for you to get the services cutting back the hours that the services are available cutting back staff that performs the services and telling you when you can become available to take part in those services councilman-at-large bell said pri orities are not set by the government they are set by the hospitals and hospital administrators it is a case of dollars and cents sense usually when it comes to our community it is a case of dollars because our folks do not seem to use much sense this community has been system atically deprived of the kinds of services that we must have in order to exist we are not going to take it anymore either they continue to provide us services on same level or we are going to do something to close down some of their faculties for additional information about the progress plans and citizen participation contact councilman collins
