the buffalo criterion niagara region serving working leading in wny inner cities since 1923 price only 20 c per copy wny's necessary minority newspaper — featuring paid legitimate circulation vol 60 — no 17 thursday april 24 - may 1 1986 rochester minority business symposium set over 30 nys agencies will be available at informational event sales representatives from minority and women owned businesses will be able to meet one of their largest potential custom ers at a unique symposium may 21st at the stale university at buffalo alumni arena more than 30 new york agencies who purchase goods and services from the business sector will have their purchasing agents on hand at the event according to paul bacon ed.d üb's assis tant vice president for purchasing and campus services bacon says new regula tions permit state agencies to purchase up to 5,000 in goods and services at a reasonable price without bid from businesses which have at least 51 percent ownership by women or minorities many of these firms however have not been calling on what could be one of their biggest customers for a variety of reasons bacon adds because existing lists of minority and women-own ed businesses may be out-of-date by the time they're printed it's diffi cult for state agencies to identify these firms also it may be difficult for state agencies to identify these firms which are typically smaller ones to have adequate sales staff to send to visit many state agencies during the year he points out the advantage of the symposium is the sales representative can effec tively call on more than 30 agencies in one day purchasing agents from the agencies will staff booths at the event in order to make themselves easily accessible to the salesperseins bacon admits in the past many small businesses typical of minority and women-owned businesses were reluctant to do business with the state because they often were not paid promptly . today every bill incur red by a state.ijgenr.v.mtist be paid within 45 days of billing or a late charge will be paid says bacon malcolm agostini ibs affirmative ac on officer says representatives from minority and women-own ed businesses from new york border areas of pennsylvania ohio and ontario are invited to attend the free symposi um the event opens with registration and coffee at i a.m followed by a welcome by ub president steven b sample sales representatives can meet the buyers from 10 a.m to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m some 1.000 information packets have been mailed to known businesses but those who do not
