annual new york slate human rights conference which will lie held at the rockefeller empire state plaza convention center in albany on monday march 17th i over 1,000 human rights activists anil political community and religious leaders are expected to participate in the gathering it will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the new york state human rights law the conference will feature workshops on police/community rela tions housing apartheid minority and women-owned businesses special initia tives in new york state and a human rights enforcement update on the federal state and local levels - th«r conference aylmgond by the slate human rights advisory council and the slate division of human rights will honor singer and social activist harry belefonte assemblyman melvin zimmer of syracuse slate senator leon bogues of harlem posthumously state senator olga mendez of the bronx commissioner john c egan of the office of general services and former congress woman bella abzug who will be the luncheon speaker douglas ii white state commis sioner of human rights will give a keynote address entitled forty years of human rights a progressive past and an uncertain future the citation was spon sored by the president of the council george k a mother garrett haa been a resident of buffalo for over 50 years she recently retired from har rison radiator where she worked for 30 yeara she has been a mother to her two grandchildren whom she raised since they were four years of age mrs garrett is a dedicated community worker she is a member of the help your neighbor association is a member ot the new york public interest research group inc 400 leroy aye donates her tune to the children as well as the elderly in the city and also vista the sick in their homes as well as going to the various hospitals although mrs garrett is a member of friendship baptist church at 402 clinton st she is well known to all of the churches n buffalo and they don't fail to call upon her at any time to perform acts of kinc.-iess she is also a mei.iber of the community gospel hour mother garrett is con nected with the buffalo criterion as a sales representative for the buffalo criterion news paper the rev a charles ware is her pastor rites held for mrs carrie mclurkin funeral services for the late mrs carrie mc lurkin were held tues day feb 18th at 1 p.m from second temple bap list church 812 east delavan aye the rev s b sutton pastor officia ted mrs mclurkin was bom in cheser south carolina on june 15 1917 to the late rev willie land sr and mrs josie land she was reborn into the family of christ at an early age and devoted her life to the service of god and man on friday feb l«th at 5 a.m she cancelled all appointments relinquish ed all duties and went home a few of her past and present affiliations were president of the second temple baptist church hospitality committee a member of the mass choir the pastor's aid and the usher board she was also an active member of the deerfield block club her survivors are four sisters mrs clara boler of buffalo mrs bessie massey mrs mary lewis and eva of charlotte north carolina two bro thers charlie land of buffalo and willie land of chester south caro lina nieces nephews cousins church family and friends pall bearers were deacon thomas shepard deacon morris hies dea con emerson sudd dea con william jefferson mrs carrie mclurkin jacob critical of eeoc action the following statement was issued by john e jacob president of the national urban league in response to reports that the equal employment opportunity commission has abandoned the use of hiring goals and time tables in settlements with private employers accused of race and sex discrimina tion the equal employ ment opportunity com mission has abandoned its policy of using hiring goals and timetables to redress discriminatory practices the new policy has been implemented without pub lic hearings without a formal vote of the com rmssioners the key to success downtown ceremony to kick-off 20th epsicopal charities appeal the right reverend harold barrett robinson bishop of western new york and the board of directors of episcopal charities have invited mayor james d griffin county executive edward j rutkowski and other elected officials commun ity leaders members of the clergy and campaign workers to be present at a ceremony at st paul's cathedral main st at cathedral park buffalo on tuesday march 4 at 11 a.m to announce the beginning of the 20th annual episcopal chari ties appeal bishop robinson will call on the people of western new york to support the work of the eighteen member agencies by contributing to the success of the appeal the bishop feels the people of western new york have always responded in a positive way when given the challenge to help those in need ' after the reading of a joint proclamation desig nating march 9th through 15th episcopal charities week in buffalo and erie county by the mayor and county executive the campaign goal market will be unveiled in cathedral park noting the progress of the campaign which will run from march 9th through 23rd with a goal of 350,000 it is hoped that the the importance of commu nity wide support for the three-w appeal twenty red balloons each carrying a message . hope from the member agencies will be released to signify the far reaching programs and services made possible by funds appeal health grant aimed at low-income neighborhoods erie county legislator william f robinson has helped to approve a resolution which authoriz ed a new york state department of health grant targeted for low income neighborhoods in erie county ' robinson said that the 1,335,482 dollar grant will increase existing staff levels at the jesse nash health center in his district this grant will be extremely beneficial to the residents of my legislative district who use the jesse nash health center said robinson he pointed out that the grant will provide funding for a variety of health care positions including public health social work ers case workers mater nity nurses and other positions that will comple ment existing county staff positions at the center robinson said that there is a dire need to provide adequate health-care ser vices to inner city resi dents and that he will continue his efforts to secure county state and federal funding for the county's neighborhood health centers erie county received 10,444,452 from state comptroller edward v regan as a partial payment of the federal and state share of anticipated welfare expen ditures for january 1986 this installment also in cludes a partial settlement of federal share claims for september 1985 and state share claims for october 1985 the remainder will be paid after the actual january expenditures are vertified statewide mr regan distributed 61,415,525 to the 57 counties outside new york city the federal portion of the latest payment amounts to 5,221,308 and the state share totals
