pointing out to the pahtir the chicanery and schemes used by the officials handling the county or lion of which i purchased 171 parcels and later was told that i had only bought 137 parrels i a pointed out that 35 pieces of property of which was of great value were taken from our list of pure baa and substituted with prop erties of much less value how it all happened was the fact that from 9 a.m morning until 9 p.m at night we were all closed in the chamber bidding with less than 40 minutes recess at the close of the bidding period past 9 p.m mrs warn irk and mr owcsarcxak and another lady insisted that my staff and i should sign the purchase offer in order that we might rush through the proceedings we questioned them about the signing of the pur chase offer before the rote the bids and the aerial numbers on the contracts once the contracts had been signed we were told that the hour had grown late and that it was impossible for them to rite in the bid price and erial numbers so they jock the contracts and lulled them in a box saving us a receipt for dr s w williams issues statement property in check aad we were sold to return the r.nt morning and j them a during has period is when they tore 3 pieces of property from our del when we returned the next rooming we da covered what had 1-11 place leaving the con tracts m their hands we tried desperately ha several for what reason he stated that no one person could purchase this much prop erty in any one city and that others should be given a chance to do some bidding i simply asked him who asked him to give roe this message he said mr casey the city attorney later he returned to me and said i warn you don't try to offer any bid in this auction for we have agreed to ignore you or we will out bid you and your money can't last as long as the city's so i entered the budding and began bidding along with other bidders and then in came bidder from the city and out bidded me on every bid i made for two days if 1 weren't out bidded they would simply strike the property down to the city there were several bidders seated in the front of the referee and other city bidders spreaded around in the community mourns exercise rsstahit and under no cimimstances dispatch hussion troops to invade poland to end the strike of is earner " the congressman who early on aug 22nd attended a closed-door cia briefing on the status of the polish ait sat lew added the recent develop ments ir poland offer the soviet union a splendid opportunity to repair its image in the international community of nations an image badly tarnished by the afghanistan invasion rather than even consider a second military invasion in leas than a year i hope the russians will stay out of poland and allow poland to expand the basic freedom that are permitted not only in the united states but in most nations of the world the polish worker are seeking ask human rights basic economic and politic rights and they should be granted certainly the soviet union realizes that the workers of poland speak for the majority of the people of poland and reflect the nation a resentment of communist domination of their govern merit and their country the discontent of the workers i simply a reflection of i problem that ha been festering faff co long ■. manifestation of the long term suffering and economic deprivation and testimony that the name of freedom burns in the heart of the pole i certainly deplore now continued the soviet jamming of voire of america broadcasts into the soviet union and i hope that developments in poland do not lead to more brearhea of the helsinaki agreements this is a watershed period for the soviet leadership they can forte the world into another era of cold war diplomacy or they can forge a new era of hast west relationships i trust that they will decide that a liberalization of their policies is in their best political and economic self interest and that a peaceful resolution to the polish situation can be
