Buses Save Commuters Time On Southbound Bridge ONCE AGAIN Metro Bus is offering Grand Island commuters an alternative to flared tempers, increased blood pressure and wasted time and gas. With severe lane restrictions once more imposed by the Grand Island Bridge reconstruction, long lines of cars and trucks are again the order of the day and mile backups are not uncommon. Metro buses, because they can alleviate the traffic crunch by carrying many would-be motorists and thus take many cars off the road, are allowed to ride along the shoulder, passing the long lines of traffic. They have preference over vehicular traffic at the bridge. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority reports that commuters ca save 25 minutes and more by using the bus, especially dur ing the morning and evening rush hours. Passengers can take th regularly scheduled #40 Metr Bus, or they can drive to th Fantasy Island Parking lot where they can park free ant take the bus. The adult cas fare is $1.40 one-way, or $2.80 round trip, with no bridge to to pay. Morning buses leave Fan tasy Island at 6:06, 6:48, 7:1 (Thruway Express), 7:25 (also Express), 7:32, 8:12, 9:17, and 10:41 A.M. Afternoon and evening buses leave Fantasy Island at 12:01, 1:11, 2:31, 4:01, 4:46, 5:11, 5:33, 6:24, 6:51, 7:54 and 10:49 P.M. For information, call 855-7211. Road Shoulders To Be Repaired ERIE COUNTY Legislator Chuck Swanick has announced he has received confirmation that the County Highway Department plans to repair the damaged shoulders on Love and Baseline Roads. The work, which is expected to be done at the beginning of October, is needed to rehabilitate shoulders that have been crumbling away due to the pressure exerted on them by heavy trucks driving on the side of the road. Love Road will be repaired along its entire length and Baseline will be worked on from Grand Island Blvd. to East River Road. "I've arranged a meeting between the County and representatives of Modern Disposal, the company which contracts to pick-up Grand Island's garbage. Their trucks are driving on the shoulder of the roads and destroying surfaces which were laid less than eight months ago. The shoulders were never made for trucks, but rather, were intended for recreational use by walkers, joggers, bicyclists, etc.," Swanick said.
