The pressure was on, as a brand new team competed to defend Grand Island High School's first place status as defending Chalk Walk champion's, Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Lewiston Art Festival. In the end, Julie Homa, Saundra Marcel and Nicole Summer exceeded all expectations for a novice team by finishing first and also capturing top prize in the People's Choice division, first for the school. GUIS is the first school in Erie County and only the second school in Chalk Walk's thirteen year history to post back to back wins in two consecutive years. A, right, ESZZSSS2 W <>, Jo submitted by Nora Klein, Chamber shows Island pride, postcard style by Deanne Bartha The best photographers know all too well that timing and even the weather can make or break a good shot. One and one half years in the making, this aerial view of Grand Island taken by Mark Dettmer and Sally Cook, partners in Angel Art of Amherst, provided the picturesque scene that shows how unique the Island's geography is, yet how accessible the Island also is to the major cities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls. This photo was actually taken in 1993 and was available then to residents in true photo form. It was Chamber of Commerce member and life-long resident Paul McCarthy who picked up on making it into a postcard that the Chamber could sell. Me made the effort to track down the photographer and what once was an inkling of an idea became one of the fust promotional pieces to come out of the budget set for tourism and public relations. Also instrumental in seeing the project through to completion were committee co-chairs Betty Harris and Fran Jensen. The committee includes Ron Sipos, Linda Sobieski, Skip Mazenauer and Jim Sharpe. It was a Chamber project that took several months and is unrelated to any economic development funds procured in recent months.
