ISLAND DISPATCH With The GRAND ISLAND NEWS VOL. 46 NO. 34 • Nov. 3,1989 GRAND ISLAND, NY • 773-7676 3g PAGES 35* Happy Halloweeners At The Nike Base Monday night there were plenty of ghosts and goblins present for the Halloween Party at the Nike Base Park. Sponsored by the Parks & Recreation Department and the Grand Island JayCees, the event attracted over 400 batmen, punk rockers, princesses and assorted characters. The candy count was guessed right on the nose by Megan Malaney at 310! Photo by Harhl I-arr Weather THE OLD Farmer's Almanac says: November average temperature to be 44 degrees, 4.5 degrees above normal. Nov. 3-4: rain, warm. Nov. 5-8: sunny, then rain. Nov. 9-10: partly cloudy, seasonable. Hearing To Air 1990 Town Budget JUST AS IN the past ten years or more, the town budget for 1990 to be considered at a public hearing Thursday, November 9, also includes wage increases for town officials and other employees. The proposed general town tax rate projects an increase of 6<t per $1000 of assessed valuation which, for example, would amount to $6 on property having an assessed valuation of $100,000. The tax rate for refuse pickup here will remain the same although raises have been predicted in other communities. An increase of 3C per $1000 of assessed valuation is shown in the highway fund. The 1989 rate was $1.65 per M. The proposed budget lists $1.68 for 1990. The water department has requested $777,059 be included for the new year whereas $721,895 is recommended. The 1989 budget was $725,088. Water district tax rates vary, depending on services rendered and costs incurred in each district. All amounts to be considered at the preliminary budget hearing Thursday are tentative. Town law sets November 20 as the final date on which a budget must be approved by a town board. The Island town board could approve the 1990 budget immediately after Thursday's hearing or at the following board meeting set for November 20. MEK New Bridges A Long Way Off ALTHOUGH IT is quite obvious there is a need for additional bridges to the mainland, it may be the year 2000 before Albany takes action. Senator John Daly at a meeting in the town hall Thursday, October 26, said the NYS Dept. of Transportation believes the present spans are "sufficient for the next 10 years" after the ongoing renovations are finished. Stating that the cost of a new bridge would be "exceptionally high,'' Daly added, "And if you build something you have to pay for it." Questioning if "another bridge is the answer," Daly spoke about the need for constructing the LaSalle Expressway to divert truck traffic from Island bridges.
