Bridge Reopens At Last THE SOUTHBOUND south Grand Island Bridge opened to traffic Tuesday morning after being closed since Labor Day. It has been closed periodically since mid-1988 for a $2.4 million reconstruction project. The single-lane closure on the northbound north Grand Island Bridge is scheduled to reopen today while the entrance for the Robert Moses Parkway will open about December 20, according to a Thruway Authority spokesman. MEK Luther Talks About Goals "I THINK this is the first time since 1940 that a supervisor who was out of office was returned to that post," LaVerne C. Luther said this week about his November 7th victory. "It's rewarding that the voters had confidence in me and supported my re-election. As supervisor I will do my best to represent all the people,'' he said. One of his first priorities will be to update the 20 year old master plan, Luther said, adding he would also push for completion of the LaSalle Expressway to the Youngmann Highway as a first step to relieve traffic. "At present, I am against upgrading the reval (property assessment)," he said, noting there are 25 other communities in the County Consortium - "and there is no need that Grand Island should be one of the first to upgrade." "People on fixed incomes or young families cannot afford another property increase through reval," said Luther. "The town should also be focusing on commercial and light industry to off-set the rising taxes." "The first year I must work with the present supervisor's budget. However, I believe I can work with department heads and control unnecessary spending," he said. "As I said throughout my campaign, 'I will listen' and work very hard to keep the integrity of Grand Island. There is one thing we all agree on: Grand Island is special," Luther said at the conclusion of an interview.
