GI Rotary attacks disease in South America John Harbison Jr., President of the Grand Island Rotary Club, recently announced that a $440,000 funding package has been successfully put together to help eradicate Chagas Disease in Bolivia. It all started on a trip to Bolivia in May 1997 to review a previous project, when Harbison made phone contact with two key Rotarians, Sr. Gaston Pol and Sr. Noel Salazar through Dr. Wilson Boots, a Missionary. Over a year of effort was spent to define the means to meet the need and to obtain the competitive grant of $275,000 from the Rotary Foundation. Rotary District 7090 of Western NY and Southern Ontario will contribute $24,000 and Rotary District 4690 of Bolivia will contribute $1,000. Food for the Hungry International (FHI), a nongovernment organization headquartered in Scottsdale Arizona, will contribute $140,000. The three-way partnership was established to help implement a process to eliminate the Vinchuca, a small brown beetle shaped bug. It is the kissing bug that transmits the microscopic parasites into the victim's blood stream thus causing Chagas disease. Chagas disease is ranked as the 3rd leading cause of death in Central and South America. It kills two percent of its victims in a matter of days. As carriers of the parasites, the infected persons become potential transmitters of the disease to other ROTARY RELIEF - The Grand Island Rotary Club recently announced that a $440,000 funding package has been put together to help aid people in Bolivia that are suffering from Chagas Disease. Cannon captures two design awards Cannon has announced two recent projects have been recognized for design excellence by the Western New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Cannon, along with the Greater Buffalo International Airport Design Group received the prestigious honor of First Award for creating a new Buffalo-Niagara International Airport. The design fashioned a distinctive "Gateway to the Niagara" that emphasizes passenger convenience, operational simplicity and functional efficiency. The Jury made the following comments praising the design, "An exceptional building accomplishing the goal of capitalizing upon a 'one in a lifetime' opportunity to create a positive image and new gateway to the region." The James Madison School of Excellence earned Cannon a Honorable Mention. The school, in Rochester, will alleviate overcrowded conditions at existing schools and support the introduction of new educational initiatives. Cannon's design concept for this new middle school revolved around the state of transition, and an acknowledgment that students attending the school are experiencing a significant phase in their lives. "Good use of natural light throughout the complex, fine integration of different materials," were the Jury's comments commending the project. SCHOOL DESIGN GETS STRAIGHT AS - Cannon received an Honorable Mention for the design of the James Madison School of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects. Reiter speaks on Fair Tax "Let's get rid of the IRS turkey, 'cause it's a bird that won't fly," declared Grand Island resident Jerry Reiter as TV cameras from Channel 2 and 7 rolled last week during his speech to the Western New York Chapter of the New York State Commercial Association of Realtors. Reiter, who serves as a national field organizer for Americans for Fair Taxation, carved up a turkey to symbolize the reform group's effort to cut all federal income taxes, including business to business taxes, corporate taxes, gift taxes, estate taxes, and all other "hidden" taxes which the public pays without always being aware of it.
