Island DISPATCH VFW Feast page 12 The Big 4-0! page 12 New & Old page 6 Complete Community Coverage 55 Years As the Voice of Grand Island Award Winning Newspapers The Official Newspaper of the Town of Grand Island and the Grand Island School District SEPTEMBER 10, 1999 65c 20 Pages Vol. 55 No. 21 Machines primed for Primary on Tuesday by Deanne Bartha Thursday morning the Town of Grand Island's voting machines filled the Highway garage, ready for preparation for the Primary set for Tuesday, Sept. 14. Although it may seem confusing to vote the Primary, it's really not once voters get a look at the inside of the equipment.Party lines- are straightforward and simple. On the Republican line for County Executive are Jeffrey L. Baran and Joel A. Giambra. GOP registered voters, choose one. Republican line for Town Justice are Timothy J. Mordaunt and Sybil E. Kennedy. Giambra and Dennis T. Gorski. Registered Independence voters, choose one. Conservative line for Councilman are Richard W. Crawford and Peter M. McKee. Registered Conservatives, choose one. Conservative line for Town Justice are Timothy J.- Mordaunt and Sybil E. Kennedy. Registered Conservatives, choose one. With the "Opportunity to Ballot" comes the write-in vote on the Conservative line, with three candidates already petitioned. They are: John Lexo, Kevin Rustowicz, and Bruce Kaiser. The write-in vote isn't as complicated as it may seem. Here's how to do it: The machine is equipped with a horizontal row of numbered slides, one slide directly above each office column at the top of the machine. Behind these slides — inside the machine — is a roll of paper which the voter can, by raising the slide, write the name of any candidate whose name does not appear on the ballot. The number appearing on the title of office is duplicated by the same numbers on a slide directly above the title. Lift, and write. It's that simple. Make sure to use the correct spelling. GETTING READY FOR TUESDAY - The voting machines are at the Highway Department in preparation of Tuesday's Primary, At left is how the main ballots look. Above is the write-in area, complete with pencil, and right is the choice of delegates to the Bth Judicial District Convention on the Independence line which include Gerald Ast; Joseph Lukasiewicz, Sr.; Michael G. Sendlbeck; and Christine J. Sendlbeck. Board designates private road White Oak Lane by Rick Forgione After over a year of waiting, the residents of Fairway Greens Phase II finally have a name they can call their own. The Grand Island Town Board on Monday voted unanimously to designate the private road, off Whitehaven Road as White Oak Lane. ; " The portion of Fairway Greens, which consists of an oval shaped road that, once completed, will connect on both ends to different sections of Whitehaven Road, has always been considered part of Whitehaven Road. This has caused a problem for several residents in the development who last year requested that the board give the road its own unique name to establish itself as an independent road. The fact that each home in the complex has. a Whitehaven address, causes much confusion to delivery people and visitors, according to residents. "That's a road," said Councilman Michael Heftka who told the board that he had visited the site and found it confusing to locate because it didn't have its own street sign. Heftka added that he had contacted the fire department, which admitted that it has had some problems in the past locating the area. The Town Board, which had taken caution with the request, appeared WELCOME TOTHE NEIGHBORHOOD - This private road for Fairway Greens Phase II will now be called White Oak Lane. Deadline for Seneca Nation Questionnaire nears The deadline is Sept. 15 for the Seneca Nation Lawsuit questionnaire, mailed out by the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce, to over a hundred elected officials. The Chamber's Seneca Nations Lawsuit Public Relations Steering Committee, complied approximately ten questions that addresses key issues pertaining to the lawsuit and it's effects on the Grand Island community and it's people. "Our committee spent a lot of time putting together the questions that were sent out. The Chamber's goal was and still is to inform the public, by giving them as much information as we can," said Jack Hugill, co-chair and Chamber president. "In order to do that our committee spent many hours researching and questioning the people in the community. The questions on the questionnaire reflect what the Chamber and the people in this community wanted to know from their elected officials." The questionnaires were sent out in early July and as the deadline nears, the Chamber has reported that, although many have been returned, there are some still out. "It is our hope that our elected officials respond to the people of this community," said Jim Sharpe, co-chair and Chamber vice-president. "There is nothing complicated about these questions, they're pretty straight forward yes and no questions. Our intent was to ask questions that could not be twisted or misleading, but reflected the concerns of the people of Grand Island and the surrounding communities involved in this lawsuit. Also, there is plenty of room for clarification of their answers at the bottom of the form, if they wish." The Chamber is releasing the questionnaire to be published so the public will know what questions "continued on page 4 continued on page 4
