This year's event has three sponsors including The Grand Island Record, which a Gold Sponsor, and both Tops Friendly Markets and Adelphia, which are Silver Sponsors. In addition. Heading the ii>! <>:' :iitKu-iion«, for the event is Bill Butski, a professional magician from Niagara - l-'.ills The \eic;-;iii pcrlWiiicr haentertainedhaentertained and captivated audiences .o£,all' ages- with his special brand of magic. His performance is filled with plenty of audience participation as well as fun. In the past, Butski has.entertained groups at various theme parks, dinner ships, restaurants, schools, hospitals and private parties. Butski will perform at 1 p.m. and again at 3 p.m. In addition, the Grand Island Lions Club will have two booths at the event where people can undergo free testing for_ glaucoma. The testing of people's eyes will be done by Dr. Eric Czora from 10 a.m. to Noon, using his air puff machine. "Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness and a major health problem for adults," said Paul C. Bassette, Grand Island Lions Club President. "This testing will provide an opportunity for people to get an early warning," he continued, "or, a little piece of mind," Two food vendors will be offering their products at the event: Pizza Hut and Tops Friendly Markets. The latter will be offering, in part, samples of a new brand of sausage they will be carrying at their Grand Island Blvd. store. As far as exhibition booths go, the show is almost sold out with only a couple booths still available. "We will have a wide variety of vendors participating," said Island Expo - 99 committee chair GETTING READY - "Die Business Expo Committee prepared for the '99 Business Expo this week, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Bible Presbyterian Family Center. GIHS celebrates Homecoming ‘99 Grand Island High School will be swarming with blue and whitefaced Vikings this weekend as students celebrate Homecoming '99! - This year's homecoming weekend will begin today,, as high school students come dressed in their best school spirit gear for Spirit Day. Beginning at about 1:15 p.m., a pep rally will be held in the auditorium to introduce all of Grand Island's fall sports teams. At the end of the ceremony, this year's Homecoming King, Queen and their Royal Court will be named. This year's Royal family are: King Alex Winstel and Queen Laurie Steckleberg. Members of the Royal Court are Danielle D'Abate, Missy Bruno, JiTlian Stott, Tom Michaud, Paul Burke, and Sam Berry. Saturday will be the day that Grand Island students truly shine.as the Vikings take on Kenmore-East in a varsity Niagara Frontier League football game beginning at 2 p.m. at Masters Field. The Vikings (3-3) come into the game riding a two-game winning streak, hopping to roll past Kenmore-East for their.fourth win of the season. The Grand Island bleachers are expected to be packed with wild Viking fans showing their support for their hometown team. - Homecoming '99 will shift gears to a more romantic and calm setting later . Saturday night as the Homecoming dance takes center stage. This year's dance theme is "More Than Words" and will be held in the High School Gymnasium from 8 p.m. to midnight.All Grand Island residents, young and old, are invited to take part in this year's Homecoming festivities and root for the Vikings! Free rabies clinic set Erie County Executive Dennis T. Gorski, Erie County Legislator Charles M. Swanick and Town of Grand Island Supervisor Peter A. McMahon would like to advise local residents of the upcoming site for receiving free rabies vaccinations for their cats and dogs. Due to the recent discovery of the first rabid raccoon on Grand Island, we are offering this clinic for family pets that have not recently been vaccinated or who need to update their vaccination. The clinic will .be held Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 2-4 p.m. at the Grand Island Fire Hall located at 2275 Baseline Rd. •Pets must be at. least three months in age to receive rabies vaccination."All dogs and cats must be restrained with a leash and/or pet carrier(s) at all times. •No person shall be allowed to have more than three pets in line at one time. •Proof of previous rabies vaccinations must be provided to receive a three-year certificate, otherwise a one-year certificate will be issued. Grand Island Retiree claims $181,334 Take Five Jackpot NY Lottery officials announced Dolores Cane, of Grand Island, as the sole first prize winner of $181,334.50 for the Friday, Sept. 10 Take Five drawing. "I read the winning numbers in the newspaper and when.l realized I won I started shouting for my.sonin-law," said Mrs. Cane. "He would always kid me that he never hears any shouting when I check my numbers. Well, this time he said, 'what's' all the shouting about?'" Cane is retired from the U.S. Office of Immigration. She has two children and three grandchildren. She plans to spend her winnings on her children. Cane purchased her winning Take Five ticket at Tops Market, 2160 Grand Island Blvd. The Take Five winning numbers on Friday, Sept. 10 were: 11, 21, 29, 34, 35.
