              Island  DISPATCH -Complete Community Coverage 55 Years As the Voice of Grand Island Award Winning Newspapers The Official Newspaper of the Town of Grand Island and the Grand Island School District Restored Ferry Village home is Island treasure by Kelly Gast The town of Grand Island itself stands alone as a "unique landmark, unlike many towns that simply stand out because of a particular landmark or structure. However, Grand Island too, also has many landmarks of historical importance to our community, although many have burned down. The McGomb House, later known as the Island Club on West River near Alt Boulevard, the Oakfield Club on West River, the Bedell House at East River Road and the residence of John Nice, the first Supervisor of Grand Island which stood at East River Road and Whitehaven were all at one point in time famous buildings. None of them stand today. But, what is now the. private home of John and Editha Kapoor, remains standing. Built in 1851, this home which sits at 1496 Ferry Road across the street from Anchor Marine between Sandees Pub and The Village Inn, has always been in their family. The home used to be not only of great importance but of necessity to many Islanders. The store opened back when the ferry service was still shuttling people back and forth to the mainland. A meat market was stationed in the back along with a penny candy shop, a post office, a cigar shop which men like my grandfather quite fancied, a general store and a small gas pump outside. "The store had a little of everything for everyone," Mrs. Kapoor said. The General Store was particularly essential to. the settlers of Grand Island since it was impossible to get across the Niagara at times. There were not many places on Grand Island where supplies could be purchased. It was the local hot spot. This impressive home has been under restoration by the Kapoors for several months, all the major renovations finished. Kapoor stated that it broke her heart to see how dilapidated the house had become, having many fond childhood memories growing up there. "There is a lot.of history to this place. I just want to return it to the age in which it was built." And that she has done. The home is country Victorian style with long lush curtains in each doorway, beautiful wood work and wood burning stoves.
