(photos by Keiiy Gast) j Fire damages former bakery Shortly before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, Terry Guenot, an alert, off duty Erie County Deputy Sheriff, noticed smoke coming from the rear of an unoccupied building at 2261 Grand Island Blvd., and immediately notified the Grand Island Fire Company. Heavy smoke and flames were erupting from a. rear storage room at the former Doolies Restaurant and Bakery, when GIFC Deputy Chief Peter McMahon arrived two minutes later; thereafter, three fire suppression crews, using 1 3/4" lines from Engines #3 and #6, had ihe fire under control and "knocked down" within 24 minutes. Five minutes later, the fire was completely out; meanwhile. Mutual Aid assistance had been obtained from Kenmore, Brighton, and Sheridan Park VFD's, due to the huge potential for fire loss, as well as safety considerations. Their manpower and equipment was released when the entire operation was swiftly concluded, according to Deputy Chief McMahon. Fortunately, there were no furnishings or bakery equipment inside, and structural damage was limited to $7,500, he added. The exact cause of the fire is presently being probed by GIFC Fire Investigator Harold Barth and ECSD Fire Investigator Ronald Kenyon.
