Inc., will be held Monday, July 10, at River Oaks Golf Club, Grand Island, with proceeds to benefit pediatric and breast cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Keith's Classic is a memorial tribute to Keith Brewer, a six-yearold who lost his battle with cancer in 1987. Keith's parents, Jacqueline and Tim Mordaunt, are chairmen of this event, which over the past 12 years, has raised over $700,000 for cancer research,,at- Roswell Park. The morning tournament begins at 7 a.m. with a continental break- fast and concludes with a lunch reception and silent auction. Players will be grouped in four and the fee is $125 per player. The afternoon tournament begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch and concludes with a dinner reception and live auction with Larry Norton from 97 Rock serving as the auctioneer. Participants will play in groups of five for a player fee of $175. Players may register as individuals or in complete groups. All participants have a chance to win a golf cart, automobiles, airline tickets, and much more. A new addition to this year's tournament is the raffling of a new Volkswagon Beetle. Dr. Philip McCarthy is the clinical director of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Roswell Park. Late last year, he went to the Roswell Park Cafeteria for lunch, purchased a bottle of Ocean Spray crangrape juice from the case, and much to his surprise the lid revealed he was a winner of a brand new Volkswagon Beetle. The irony of all this is that the weekend before, he was with his wife, son, and daughter having lunch - they purchased a bottle of Ocean Spray and looked under the lid to find nothing. His daughter begged him to buy another bottle for a chance to win the car. He explained to her that the odds of winning are 1 in 1.4 million and that it's just a gimmick to make the consumer buy more juice. Although disappointed, . she understood. According to Dr. McCarthy's wife, Jane, "it will be hard for the kids to believe anything their dad says from her on in!" The best thing about the story is that in the true spirit of giving, Dr. McCarthy has donated the car to the Roswell Park Alliance Community Fundraising Board. The car will be raffled at Keith's Classic Memorial Golf Tournament at River Oaks Golf Club. Tickets are being sold for $5 each with proceeds to benefit cancer research at Roswell Park. To purchase a chance, or for more information about Keith's Classic, call Roswell Park at 845-8317. -■ Jacqueline and Tim Mordaunt Grand Island's Independence Day Celebration Headlining this year's 4th of July celebration is a firework extravaganza, the largest display in Western New York, with Fuccillo Chevrolet as the principal sponsor and Fujisawa Health Care Group, Inc. a significant contributor as well.
