I Traffic Safety concerns aired at Town Board Meeting by William O'Connor "I am truly starting to fear for the safety of my children who may . really get hurt someday playing out in front of their own house. In six years time we have witnessed approximately. seven accidents," wrote Jennifer Dzielski in a letter N dated August 14, presented Monday at the Grand Island Town Board meeting. Dzielski lives on Stony Point, near Ransom and Bedell Roads. The recent detours on Baseline and West River have forced many commuters to detour past her house. The "last straw" took place on Sunday August 12 when a young, allegedly drunk, man traveling at a high rate of speed damaged her lawn and several of her neighbors' lawns. This problem is soon to be compounded by the start of School. Buses from the High School, Huth and Sidway Schools will have to detour past her house. . Supervisor McMahon answered the letter noting that the town has given specific attention to that area since the detour. . "(W)e have assigned police patrol cars to the area on eleven separate occasions...(they). have issued several citations." McMahon also noted that a day care center in the area will soon add to the problem. The Board suggested that, since Stony Point is a county road, requests should be made to the Sheriff's Department or the NYS Police to provide for traffic control during peak hours. In a related story the Baseline bridge south of Long Road will open this weekend. The bridge north of Long will most likely open by the end of September according to Jerry Dorobiala of the NYS Dept of Transportation. See map on page 5. In other Town Board news: Erie County gave notice of Hazardous Waste Drop-off Day on Saturday, September 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Modern Corporation Facility, 266 Hopkins Street (Near Tiffi), Buffalo. Noted that the NYS Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation is the "Lead agency" for the East River Wetlands Enhancement Project (along the east shores of Beaver Island Park). Approved the contract with Erie County for the STQP-DWI, Contract. Approved a resolution to fly the POW/MIA flag at the Grand Island Town Hall on Veterans and Memorial Day. Council Member Mary Cooke noted that the town flies the flag at Veterans Park every day. The Board approved permits for: Zygmunt Bieniulis to keep four horses on his 10 acre property on Staley Rd... Robert Wakefield to keep "One or More riding Animals" on his five acre property on Staley Rd. Wakefield's application noted he had five horses, two llamas and several geese. The Board noted receipt of the following: Waterfront ReDiscovery Conference materials. The Conference will take place in Albany, September 26-27.
