Public Information Officer Shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 23, Grand Island Fire Company Rescue Personnel responded tp a three car chain reaction collision at Baseline Road and Homeland Drive. Chief Skip Mrkall reported that 52-year-old Doris Heaney of Bedell Road, and her- teenage daughter were treated for non-critical head and neck injuries after their vehicle was struck in the rear by a pickup truck. They were transported to Kenmore Mercy Hospital by ambulance for additional medical followup. Eighteen-year-old Bill Hillman of Woodstream Drive, a passenger in the truck, was treated for a head laceration and Paying more at the pump Gas prices everywhere, like those at Mobil on Grand Island Boulevard, rose dramatically over this past weekend. According to an Associated Press survey, the national average price for gasoline was $1,67 on April 20, a 8.4 percent increase from April 6. Locally, prices rose by 14 to 18 cents, while in midwestem cities like Chicago prices went up by as much as 23 cents. The increase is being blamed on new environmental guidelines that are required for spring and summer. Boles, president and chief executive officer of People Inc. recently announced the appointment of Grand Island resident Jeffrey L. Bridenbaker, 932 East River Rd. as program director of the agency's Individualized Residential Alternative and Apartment Program. Bridenbaker was previously director of community support services with Heritage Centers, responsible for policies and procedures, fiscal affairs, development and evaluation of programs, facilities management and staff development and training. He directed 21 program sites where 1,217 consumers received services. Bridenbaker is a member of the Development Disabilities Assoc, of Western New York, the New York State Association of Community and Residential Agencies and the New York State Association for Retarded Children Group Purchasing committee. He holds a bachelor of science in health services from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Quality Quest to hold awards and election reception Quality Quest will hold their Environmental Stewardship Awards and Elections on Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2100 Whitehaven Rd. The event will feature music by Tom and Kathryn Pollard along with food and refreshments. Quality Quest will recognize several deserving individuals in Grand Island. William Burch is among them. He will be honored for his 52-plus years of dedication toward the cause of preserving and protecting Grand Island's environment.Burch, along with his wife Olive has raised three sons on the island. He is an active member of the Buffalo Museum of Science, National Audubon Society, Quality Quest and the Buffalo Ornithological Society. Burch has taken a major role in educating the public about the preservation of endangered species, including the peregrine falcon and American bald eagle. Sarah Trembath will also be honored. She has led the Regional Beach Sweep effort from the Pennsylvania line to Lake Ontario for the past 12 years. She has been fighting to clean Great Lakes pollution for more than 35 years. Cynthia Booker and the members of the Kaegebein Environmental Club will also be among those honored. The club has 42 members, all children in grades 2-5. They meet once or twice a month. The club began roughly three years ago,, when Cynthia decided to have her class study the amount of trash generated by the use of plastic flatware in the school's cafeteria.
