Approximately 150 were in attendance, including all members of the fire company and their guests. Those in attendance enjoyed an assortment of food and beverages, and a band was on hand to supply the entertainment. (photo by Lisa Mrkall) Coaching legend Masters death at 70 shocks community by Jon Sandino Gene Masters, who symbolized everything that high school athletics stood for, most notably Grand Island football and baseball, died on Monday of a heart attack. He was 70. Masters was sitting at. 7:30 a.m. mass at St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church when he passed away. It was reported that just before the Gospel was read, Masters grabbed his chest arid his head fell backward. Emergency units arrived almost immediately, but attempts to revive him failed. His death was unexpected. Masters did have heart trouble in 1991 when he survived septuplebypass surgery. However, over the past 10 years he kept in shape and remained healthy. As a matter of fact, doctors advised him not to drive after the surgery. So Masters, which should not come as a surprise, used his bike instead. Throughout his 44-year coaching career, Masters showed a burning desire to succeed-one which many coaches could only dream of, but never achieve. "He led by example, he expected excellence," said Grand Island Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Fields. "Through his life he showed his us how to be a leader." "He's probably the number one football and baseball coach in not only Grand Island, .but in Western New York," said Jon Roth, Grand Island High School Athletic Director. "He was a true legend in Western New York." "Every May was the celebratidn of inspiration. Graduating seniors choose a teacher that made a difference in their lives," Fields said.
