Prior to addressing those agenda items, the town board officially proclaimed Aug. 16, 2002 as" National Airborne Day, and presented 82nd Airborne and WW Post 9249 member Joe Synakowski with a special certificate. On June 25, 1940, a Parachute Test Platoon was authorized by the War Department. The test, composed of 48 volunteers, began training in July 1940 and performed the first official parachute jump on Aug. 16, 1940. The success of the Parachute Test Platoon led to the formation of a large and successful airborne contingent serving in World War II to the present. That group is the 82nd Airborne Division, and it was the first Airborne Division organized out of the success of the Parachute Test Platoon. Other News \ - In other happenings at the meeting, board members set three public hearings for their next meeting on Aug. 19. They pertain to parking restrictions near Grand Island Central High School, a request for a block party by Schatt Court residents and a special use application for Michael A. Lawton for home occupation use. - Councilman Kevin Rustowicz. made a motion to appoint Reg Schopp to the Youth Advisory Board. The motion passed 5-0. - Town Attorney Peter Godfrey was appointed as affirmative action officer. - The board accepted.with regret the resignation of John W. Thompson from the Grand Island Police Department. - Three special use renewals were granted by the board. Mary Ann Fairbairn, 2136 Fix Road, was granted a renewal for her customary home occupation while Zygmunt Bieniulis, 3380 Staley Road, was granted renewal to keep four horses in his barn house. Also, Mark Zarbo, 2665 Grand Island Blvd., was granted a special use renewal for his hotel/motel/restaurant/business.Public Hearing There was one public hearing scheduled for Monday's meeting, and it pertained to the Island Meadows Subdivision Part 2. Attendees had the opportunity to speak for or against the item, but nobody approached the board on this issue. Town board members then proceeded to grant final plat Island resident places well in 4-H Horse Show Congratulations to Jacquiene Sondel. daughter ol Ken and Sue Sondel of Grand Island, for her placements in the 4-H Horse Show at the Niagara County Fair on Aug. 4. Sondel retired her hoise of five years. Babe, and this is her first year with her new par.net. Mason D. Brown, owned by Tina Giambra and Rob Luthringer. She rides Western and placed as listed: first place in Open Halter, firsi place in Open Jr Western Pleasure, second place in Open Jr. Equitation, fourth place in Open Jr. Showmanship, and sixth place in Open Jr. Command Sondel and Brown will be competing in the F.ne County Fair on Aug 12. Garden and Antique Tractor Pull next sesquicentennial events on tap by Jon Sandino The dog days of summer are upon us, but that does not mean there is nothing left to do. Just when you think the. town's sesquicentennial celebration is over, another majo I event is knocking on *••*"'*""" I the door. 1 On Aug. 17 and 18 Grand Island 8 will witness an old-fashioned j Garden and Antique Tractor Pull J like it has not seen in years. 1 According to event co-chairs !• George DeGlopper and Jim Carlson, this two-day event will recognize the farming heritage of Grand Island. The festivities will kick off. at the Grand Island Rod and Gun Club on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Garden 1 Tractor Pull. This event will be j held under the auspicious of the ! Western New York Garden 1 Tractors Pullers Association, and j will feature both stock and stock I modified tractors. Bring youT gar- I den tractor and pull! | On Sunday at noon, the action I continues at the Rod and Gun Club I with the Antique Tractor Pull. This I event will be conducted under the I auspicious of the Gennesse Valley | Antique Tractor Club and will also | feature stock and stock modified 1 tractors. In addition to the afore| mentioned, if anyone has a pre-1 1956 tractor with a factory draw bar and wishes to take part in the pull, they are encouraged to enter.
