During the Aug. 19 meeting, town board members unanimously adopted local law number two - a law which restricts parking on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on designated side streets by the high school, in an attempt to satisfy concerned citizens. Over the past few years, students have been forced to find places to park on the street due to "a lack of parking spaces in the high school parking lot." Many of the people that live near the school have complained that students were driving recklessly up and down the streets, and "whipping in an out of parking spaces," said numerous residents. After several months of researching the issue, the town board came to a decision and set the restrictions in late August. The restrictions varied from street-to-street. For example, certain streets only have restrictions for one-quarter or one-half mile, while others have restrictions for the whole street. While the length of the restrictions for the most part were clear, it was the time period that baffled some residents. "Winter rules are you can't park on the street before six in the morning, correct?" Tracy,Lane resident Tony D'Orazio asked town Supervisor Peter McMahon. • "From 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. you can't," responded McMahon. "But after six you can?" D'Orazio asked. "After six you can," McMahon answered. That's my question... Why would someone park their car at six-o-clock and have to move it at seven?" D'Orazio asked. "It doesn't make sense." McMahon responded, "No one would," "I would," D'Orazio said jokingly, as everyone in the room laughed. On a serious note, D'Orazio did suggest that the town board change Library books purchased to honor retired board member Lazenby The Grand Island Memorial Library Board of Trustees recently purchased two books in honor of long-time board member Gail Lazenby. A recent retiree, Lazenby was recognized for his years of service by the dedication of an inscribed plaque in each of the books. The two books selected as favorites by Gail were The Velveteen Rabbit by Margaret Bianco and Benjamin Franklin by Edmund Sears Morgan. These books will go into circulation and will be available for the public to enjoy. Board members shown here at the dedication are from left. Not pictured is trustee Diana Schwartz. Lazenby has recently relocated to Florida where he is enjoying his retirement. Firefighters assess emergency response by Public Information Officer Ray Pauley While a group of Grand Island firefighters toured the Islandview Apartment complex at 2136 Baseline Rd. on Saturday, Sept. 14, Grand Island Fire Company Chief Skip Mrkall met with Site Manager Carol Zander to discuss emergency planning and preparedness in the event of a fire incident. " Maintenance Supervisor Jim O'Sullivan explained that the entire facility is equipped with a sprinkler system, along with an extensive fire detector system, internal and external alarms, and fire company standpipe connections for increased water pressure if needed. Hydrant locations, building access routes, utility shutoffs, and fire exits were also pinpointed for firefighters who might have to assist with lifesaving evacuation, as well as fire suppression.A "live" fire drill also demonstrated that residents were familiar with evacuation plans and the need for "roll call" accountability to insure that everyone had safely exited the building. Town of Grand Island Fire Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer Kevin Koch disclosed that by January 2003, senior citizen housing and others, must comply with New York State Law relating to fire safety and evacuation plans. Quarterly fire drills are an essential part of these mandates according to Koch. If you have any questions about such legal requirements, call Koch at 773-9600, Ext. 645, and he will be glad to pass on the relevant information. To insure that everyone has safely exited the building, a 'roll call' of the residents is taken in designated safety zones after fire drill evacuation.
