Following Tuesday night's final sesquicentennial committee meeting at the Grand Island Memorial Library, only one sesquicentennial event remains for the town of Grand Island - the Burying the Time Capsule event which is set for the morning of Dec. 31. Over 100 people were on hand for Tuesday's meeting, one which saw over 30 people recognized for their efforts in the past year. The meeting started with opening comments from sesquicentennial chairman Mike Schneider, and was followed by a presentation of the Sesqui Sampler video, currently available at the Dispatch, the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and Giecom.net. Following the video, awards were handed out. Each person that was recognized received a plaque with their name engraved on it, a sesquicentennial program book, special collectors envelopes made available by the Grand Island Post Office, and a copy of the sampler video. The meeting wrapped up with Schneider receiving a standing ovation for his efforts during this past year, and a group photo featuring all the attendees at this gathering. Though the celebration is near its end, Island residents can still take a piece of this year's unforgettable birthday bash home. Currently, the sesqui sampler video and DVD are being sold at lsledegrande.com. Also, special packages are being offered. The packages include the sesqui video and book or the sesqui DVD and book. These package deals are a steal. Do not miss your opportunity to purchase these special must-have items. Updates on high school and middle school facilities shared by Jon Sandino One look at Grand Island High School and it is evident work is continuously being done on improvements to the facility. At Monday night's Grand Island Central School District Board of Education meeting, Jack Weisenborn, director of special services, was on-hand and presented a slide show and gave a detailed update on the facilities. Weisenborn told the gathering he was going to breakdown his update status report in numerous areas, beginning with the replacement of the sidewalks outside of the high school. According to Weisenborn, eon- Crete foundations are now in, with that portion of the improvement project having been addressed between Oct. 15 and Nov. 15. Moving on, he updated the board on what the construction crews are currently working on. Outside of the high school for example, crews are busily constructing block walls for the music suite. When complete, the walls will measure 10 feet in height. As for the acoustic tile installations, materials of which came in only 10 days ago, Weisenborn said that weather problems are coming into play. "We can't proceed with that until the weather improves," Weisenborn said. Weisenborn explained to the board that electrical circuits will be installed during the spring. Also next spring, crews will have a few jobs to finish up—as current weather conditions will not permit any further work. "The high school roof is 90 percent done," Weisenborn said. "There are parts over the gym and library that are unfinished. They are not expected to be complete until the spring." He added, "The new parking lots and driveways are also almost complete. The binder coat has been applied, but we still need to apply the top coat." According to Weisenborn, the top coat will be applied when there is warm and dry weather. The parking lot was in need of repair, as it was 38 years old. Weisenborn closed his report by informing attendees on upcoming projects for the high and middle schools. "On Dec. 23 the senior cafeteria in thehigh school will have a renovation.... That includes a new ceiling and acoustical tiling," Weisenborn continued." There will also be a few rest room renovations made at that complex over the next couple of months.
